Distinctive due to eight or nine narrow, pointed leaves arranged like spokes on a wheel on square stems. Grows 6 to 8 inches tall. Leaves are fragrant. Tiny white flowers in clusters appear in spring and early summer.

Useful beneath rhododendrons and high-branched conifer trees. Does best in moist, acid soil that contains plenty of humus. Space plants 10 to 12 inches apart. Divide old plants in early spring or early fall for new starts. Or, start from seeds.
