Snow mold targets cool-season grasses. Snow is not required for pink snow mold, which primarily affects low areas. You'll spot pink fungal strands in the early morning at the edges of the patches six inches to several feet in diameter. The problem is worse in wet, shaded areas where snow lingers. For your last fall mowing, cut the lawn shorter than usual, catching grass clippings. Don't feed the lawn late in the fall--after August 15 to September 15--to harden off or toughen the grass.
