Black or red-brown beetles, a quarter- to 3/4-inch long, with extended snouts. They do minor damage to leaves. White larvae that look like puffed rice eat roots and cause irregular dead patches. The problem is worst from mid-June through July. You can spot adults on sidewalks in May or June. Considered one of the four worst pests, try using soapy water first. It will at least remove surface tension and static barriers. If damage continues, use chlorpyrifos or diazlnon.
