Heart-shaped, gleaming evergreen leaves 1/2 to 5 inches across. Two-foot-tall flower spikes sport many small white blooms in midsummer. Spreads by underground stems. All leaves rise from plant base.

Grows wild in southeast United States, but hardy north of its natural range. Likes shady, cool, and moist situations. Leaves present throughout the year, but turn a bronze color with age. Does well under rhododendrons. Requires soil high in leaf mold or other organic material, such as acid peat moss. Space plants in spring or early fall when foliage has matured. Cut leaves are long lasting-used widely by florists for greenery.
