Also called Chinese-lantern, Indian mallow, or parlor maple
Abutilon species
Whether free-standing, trained to a support, or hanging from a basket, flowering maple boasts papery blossoms in an assortment of colors. The blossoms last much of the year under ideal conditions. Many varieties with a wide range of leaf shapes and colors exist.
Light
Place in high light (full sun) during winter and medium (bright indirect) light the rest of the year. Blooms poorly in low light. Place in shade outdoors in summer.
Maintain temperatures into the 50s at night for best growth. Plant tolerates average temperatures.
Comments
Pot up regularly. Feed lightly and sporadically with low-nitrogen fertilizer. Pinch to retain shape, create bushiness, and spur more blooms. Remove yellow leaves daily to stimulate growth. Propagate by seed or tip cuttings.
