Bird-of-paradise is a spectacular, but extremely slow-growing, plant best suited to tub culture. It's noted for spear-like leaves and unusual flowers.
Light
Place in high light (full sun) during fall and winter, and medium (bright indirect) light in spring and summer.
Water
Allow soil surface to dry out between thorough waterings. Water a little less in fall and winter. Mist frequently.
Temperature
Maintain average temperatures. Avoid cold drafts.
Comments
Fertilize regularly during active growth, less often in fall and winter. Remove damaged leaves or spent blossoms. Pot up when plant rises on its roots as if on stilts. Propagate by rhizome division after flowering, offsets, or seed (may take three to 10 years to flower). Use fresh seed.
