Coddling moths infest apples and pears, creating holes from the side or blossom end to the core. The worms are about 3/4-inch long; the adults are gray moths with brown patches on the tips of their front wings. They're a half- to 3/4-inch wide with their wings spread. Scrape off all of the loose bark before spraying with dormant oil. Then you'll need to apply a two- to four-inch band of Tanglefoot or petroleum jelly around the trunk to trap the remaining larvae. You can do this with or without applying an all-purpose spray.
