The winter aconite is an early-to-bloom plant, often appearing when snow still covers the ground. Dainty, golden yellow, 2-inch flowers have a waxy consistency. The six-petaled, sweetly fragrant blooms resemble buttercups and appear on stems barely taller than a mushroom. The shiny, thick, deep green foliage rays out from underneath the flower in a starlike pattern.

Winter aconite grows from a tuber with no apparent top or bottom. Plant it in late summer as soon as you receive it, after soaking it in water or moist sand overnight to restore lost moisture. If winter aconite dries out, it will not survive.
