The perfect double flowers of the ranunculus bloom during early summer in many colors. On stems reaching 18 inches high, the flowers nod for nearly four months.

The stiff, dry tubers may need to soak in warm water for several hours before being planted. Start them indoors in a greenhouse. Or set them outdoors at a two-inch depth when the danger of frost has passed. Either way, the side with the claws should be placed down. Dig the ranunculus in the fall after foliage dies back. Store through the winter in peat or perlite at 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
