Another gem among the early blooming bulbs are snowdrops, which often appear while snow still rests on the ground. Three-part flowers drop from a thin stem about 4 to 6 inches tall. The white flowers have waxy green tips on the inner surfaces that are revealed as the petals open in the sunlight. Greenish-gray, grasslike foliage is about the same height as the flower stems.

Snowdrops are a very care-free plant, perfectly suited for a woodland area where their white flowers stand out against the dark soil and leaves. They look their best if planted in colonies or clumps and left to naturalize. Since they are not as long-lived as other bulbs, you may need to replace them more often.
