The most popular of all the little bulbs, crocuses are available in a host of breathtaking colors and bicolors. The species crocus are smaller, earlier to bloom, and less spectacular. Their multi-colored flowers have a purple stripe. They open in the sunshine and close in the afternoon. The hybrid crocus are much larger and more outstanding, with blooms of white, lavender, purple, or yellow. Narrow, long foliage is deep green, often with a stripe.

Mass crocuses around the bases of trees and shrubs, or along the edge of a winding garden path. These pint-size, ground-hugging charmers don't need to be dug, divided or replanted. Clumps will spread by seeds; new plants, however, may not bloom for several years.
