Monkey flower is know for its tubular, two-lipped blooms of yellow, gold, or red, usually splotched with a contrasting color. Plants grow 10 to 12 inches. Flowers resembles large snapdragon blooms.
Soil and Light
Locate in partial shade, in soil that is rich, moist, and well-drained. Where summer temperatures are moderate, plants tolerate more sun. Use also in pots and other containers in shaded locations and as indoor plants.
Planting
Because plants tolerate mild frosts, set in the garden in mid-spring. Start seedlings seven to eight weeks earlier. Cover lightly with soil because seed require light for germination. Where winters are mild, fall transplants will overwinter and begin flowering in the early spring.
Comments
Monkey flower does best in a cool-summer climate, and combines well with ferns and other shade plants.
