Bill Reid's Site Ripper 2.0 Beta
Utilizing Microsoft's BETA ActiveX Controls
Bill Reid
breid@ebicom.net
About:
Some of us still have a grand appreciation for seeing our information in
plain old ASCII text. It's faster across communications lines, you don't
have to put in mass reformatting time when you want to put it to your own
uses, it's parsable by most any program, etc... The Web has been a wonderful
discovery for me, but a lot of times I just don't have the time or patience
to let a page full of graphics download just to see my local weather forecast,
file search results, news updates or whatever the choice of the day is. Making
a daily habit of visiting all those sites can be a real time consumer as well.
Thus, Site Ripper comes forth. This program will snatch WWW pages from their
host, reformat them if desired and place them in text files on your local
machine. Genuine text you can call up with your favorite editor, feed to your
own programming efforts, etc...
This program is somewhat similar to those programs that capture an entire site
to hard disk, but much more limited. It only captures one page, it won't follow
links, it won't get graphics - but it will get text fast and sans HTML if desired.
Warning:
As noted, this uses a BETA version of Microsoft's ActiveX control set,
so stability is somewhat in question. I have noticed nothing other than
an occasional "slowing down" of PPP connections which is resolved by
restarting Windows, but as always, note the licence & disclaimer.
Description:
Bill Reid's Site Ripper is designed to quickly pull text information posted on
WWW pages to a local files on your machine. You add URLs to its site database
and upon execution the program copies those pages to local files.
You are also given the option to strip HTML coding from the source (great for making
readable text documents) and to append the results to the specified file rather than
replacing it.
You can automate Site Ripper's actions by running the program from the command line
or a batch file with the parameter "/Q":
Siterip2 /Q
With this switch enabled, SiteRipper will immediately begin retrieving your URLs and
will exit when finished without showing itself on your screen (under normal circumstances).
Known Limitations:
Site Ripper will not download graphics, even if the URL you have specified is a
graphic element. Sorry. By the time I took it into consideration I realized I
would have to recode the majority of the project. Thus, it ain't comin' anytime
soon.
Licence:
This program is offered as freeware. This means that although I retain the
copyright to this program, you are free to use it for personal functions without
making payment of any sort to me. You are not licensed to resell the
product by itself or as part of a larger package. You are not licensed to use
this software in a business without registration.
I would appreciate your comments by E-mail. E-mail is cheap enough that it
won't inconvenience you and I'd just like to know how many people actually
got some use out of this program.
Support Policy:
As I receive no payment for this program, I guarantee no support of any
kind. You may send questions via email, and I will attempt to answer
them at my leisure, but use of this program in no way guarantees technical
support of any kind. The controls used in this package are less stable
than normal software, and quite a few problems are related to them.
Business users will receive technical support via Email pending receipt of
registration fees.
Registration Fee:
Business users may register each copy of Site Ripper for $2 U.S. funds. Site
licences may be obtained; contact me via Email for details.
Disclaimer:
I do not guarantee (expressly or implied) that this program is suitable for
your use or free from bugs. Every effort has been made to properly test it
for my own use, but this is not to be seen as a statement of quality. You
use this program at your own risk; I will not be held responsible for any
losses incurred as a direct or indirect result of using this program. This
project uses BETA level controls, so it should be treated as experimental
software.
