  14. System Requirements for the IBM PC
  15. ----------------------------------
  16. DiscPassage requires:
  17.     . An IBM PC or compatible with MS-DOS version 3.1 or later.
  18.     . A CD-ROM drive with appropriate drivers.
  19.     . Microsoft CD-ROM extensions version 2.0 or later.
  20.     . At least 640K of RAM, with 500K available.
  21.     . A hard drive (optional, but strongly recommended).  Check
  22. your hard drive for free space.  Programs and help files take up
  23. about 450K of available space.
  24.     . Images require a Super VGA card capable of 640 x 480
  25. resolution (256 colors) and 512 Kilobytes of video memory on the
  26. board.  Standard VGA is also supported, though image resolution is
  27. noticeably lower.
  28.     . Audio requires a CD-ROM reader with an audio jack and an
  29. external speaker or headphones.
  30.     . See the READ.ME file on the root of your CD-ROM drive for
  31. up-to-date information on the current release of this software.

  34. Installing and Starting DiscPassage
  35. -----------------------------------
  36. To install the DiscPassage software on your IBM PC:
  37.     . Go to the floppy drive (or the CD-ROM drive, if you
  38. didn't receive a floppy): A: <<enter key>>
  39.     . Type SETUP and the <<enter key>>.  The program will ask
  40. you where you wish to install DiscPassage and its support files.
  41. By default, the software will be loaded into a directory named
  42. \DISCPASS on the drive you designate. 
  43.     . After the programs have been copied to your hard drive,
  44. you can start DiscPassage by logging onto your hard drive
  45. (C:<<enter key>>) then typing DP and the <<enter key>>.
  46.     . Every time you run the software, you will receive a
  47. license agreement message.  Press the <<enter key>> to assent to
  48. the license agreement and you will be able to run your DiscPassage
  49. disc.
  50.     . Installation is complete!  If you had any difficulties,
  51. please refer to the troubleshooting section.

  54. Command Line Options
  55. --------------------
  56. DiscPassage defaults to the first available CD-ROM drive letter.
  57. If there are multiple CD-ROM drives on your system, you can force
  58. the software to initially recognize an alternate drive by typing:
  59.     dp -ddrive    e.g. dp -de (for drive e:)
  60.  
  61. Also, DiscPassage automatically detects the video card installed in
  62. your system.  If for some reason you need to override the automatic
  63. detection mechanism, you can type:
  64.     dp -vnew_vcard    e.g. dp -vtseng (for tseng)
  65.  
  66. when you start the program.  To get a complete list
  67. of command-line options, type 
  68.     dp -?
  69.  
  70. For a complete list of all video options currently supported, type:
  71.     dp -vall

  74. Using DiscPassage
  75. -----------------
  76. DiscPassage displays a menu bar at the top of your screen and a status
  77. line at the bottom.   
  78.     . Help is always available through the F1 key.
  79.     . Database presents a menu of databases on the disc.  
  80.     . Search uses a simple template to enter words, wildcards
  81. or phrases (including proximity) that you want to find in the
  82. database and allows you to combine search terms with Boolean
  83. operators (AND, OR, NOT, and OFF) to make your search more or less
  84. specific.  Press F1 for a more complete description with examples.
  85. You can view the titles with the F10 (Find) key. Select the
  86. document you would like to view by highlighting the title and
  87. pressing the <<enter key>>.  You can print the document (F7), copy
  88. it to disk (F8), view related tables or figures (F9), or find any
  89. search term (F10).  F2 clears the search template.  F3 skips to the
  90. next document in the list.  ESC returns to the previous menu.
  91.     . Browse helps you find a document by scrolling through
  92. lists of words or names with the number of documents in which the
  93. term occurs. 
  94.     . Contents helps you find a document by scrolling through
  95. the table of contents, listing documents in the order in which they
  96. were originally published.
  97.     . Change/Exit allows you to change CD-ROM discs, the currently
  98. active drive, or to leave DiscPassage.  When changing discs, be
  99. sure to use the Change Disc feature.

  102. Special Function Keys
  103. ---------------------
  104.     . Enter executes the current selection or words you typed.
  105.     . ESCape leaves the current menu, document, image, or audio
  106. selection and returns to the previous menu.
  107.     . F1.  Help.  On-line help available at any time.
  108.     . F10.  Find displays titles containing a search term;
  109. highlights search term in the text.
  110.     . Press the first letter (S)earch, (B)rowse, etc. of any top
  111. menu item (or alt-letter) to select menus from the top menu bar.

  114. Troubleshooting
  115. ---------------
  116. Some commonly-encountered problems and their solutions:
  117.  
  118.     . If you were unable to log onto the drive (for example,
  119. "Invalid Drive Specification"), contact your hardware dealer for
  120. assistance.
  121.     . If you were able to log onto the CD-ROM drive, but
  122. received the message "CDR101 Disc Not High Sierra" or "CD-ROM
  123. Extensions not Version 2.0 or Greater," you will need version 2.0
  124. or later of the extensions.  Test by typing MSCDEX at a DOS prompt.
  125.     . If you received an error message such as "Cannot find
  126. database."  be sure you have a DiscPassage disc in the drive, the
  127. drive is turned on, snugly connected, closed and operational.  Be
  128. certain that the disc is shiny side down.  Make sure FILES=20 (at
  129. least) in the CONFIG.SYS file.
  130.     . If images don't display properly, run the test
  131. program "VGATEST", found in the root of the CD-ROM drive (or floppy
  132. update), before calling for technical support.  It will determine
  133. the type of video adapter card you have.
  134.     . If you receive an error message "Error in VM save file
  135. handling", and the program abruptly exits and returns to MS-DOS, it
  136. means you do not have a TMP environment variable set.  Be sure to
  137. install from SETUP.
  138.     . DiscPassage requires 500K of *free* memory.  Type
  139. "chkdsk" when logged onto your hard drive to find the amount of
  140. free memory.  You may have to remove some drivers in your
  141. CONFIG.SYS to free memory.
  142.     . See the READ.ME file on the root of your CD-ROM drive for
  143. up-to-date information.  Be sure to install DiscPassage from the
  144. floppy diskette, if one was enclosed.
  145.     . If you have no environment space left, then you will need
  146. to set TMP yourself in your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  147.         set  TMP  =  C:\DISCPASS
  148. where C:\DISCPASS is a writable location on your hard drive.
  149.     . To increase the size of your environment space (default
  150. is 128 bytes) to 1024 bytes, add the following line to your
  151. CONFIG.SYS:
  152.         shell  =  C:\COMMAND.COM   /e:1024  /p
  153. This may be needed if you have a lot of environment variables.
