  3.  Welcome to mIRC v3.2, an IRC client for Windows.
  4.  
  5.  This program is still under development and has not been
  6.  fully tested. It contains bugs. Use at your own risk. Read
  7.  the disclaimer!

  9.  For those of you new to the internet, IRC stands for Internet
  10.  Relay Chat. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where
  11.  people from all over the world can meet and talk.
  12.  
  13.  mIRC attempts to provide a user-friendly interface for use
  14.  with the IRC network.
  15.  
  16.  It has the following features:
  17.  
  18.   Coloured text to ease reading.
  19.   A handful of options.
  20.   Uncluttered display.
  21.   Simple aliases.
  22.   Configurable popup menus.
  23.   DCC Send/Get/Chat.
  24.   Some Basic fonts.
  25.   Remote CTCP tool.
  26.   Simple Event handler.
  27.   Ident server.
  28.   Finger client.
  29.   Many other useful bits and pieces.

  31.  The various parts of this client have been designed with the aim of
  32.  simplifying and speeding an IRC session.
  33.  
  34.  This client implements only a subset of all IRC2 commands. It was
  35.  designed for users who do not require the sophistication of a full IRC2
  36.  client. That said, it does support, to various degrees, more than 50
  37.  commands, and also includes other mIRC-specific commands.
  38.  
  39.  This client does NOT support: scripts, command history, and a large
  40.  number of other things.

  42.  To be able to use mIRC, you need several things:
  43.  
  44.  1. Access to the internet.
  45.  2. Software for your machine that connects you to the internet.
  46.     mIRC requires a WINSOCK.DLL, of which several versions are
  47.     available. You will need this before you can use mIRC.

  50.  The latest version of mIRC can always be downloaded by ftp from:

  52.     ftp.demon.co.uk   in   /pub/ibmpc/winsock/apps/mirc

  55.  How to Install mIRC:

  57.  This package should contain the following files:
  58.  
  59.  mIRC.exe               the program
  60.  mIRC.hlp               the helpfile
  61.  mIRC.ini               the optional ini file
  62.  readme.txt             this file
  63.  versions.txt           version history
  64.  
  65.  1. Place the mIRC.exe and mIRC.hlp files together in any directory.
  66.  
  67.  2. The mIRC.ini file should be copied to your WINDOWS directory.
  68.     It is not *necessary*, however it does provide important examples
  69.     on how to configure various aspects of mIRC, and I would urge you
  70.     to use it if this is the first time you are using mIRC.

  72.  Once you have installed mIRC, run it from windows, fill in the required
  73.  setup information, and connect to the IRC server.
