  23. 1. INTRODUCTION
  24.  
  25. Power Saver for Windows 9x gives you better control over the
  26. power usage of your computer display.  With Power Saver, you can
  27. quickly and easily put your display into a low power mode, and
  28. let Power Saver put the display into even lower power modes as
  29. your system sits idle.  The touch of a key or a twitch of the
  30. mouse will restore your system to its normal powered-on
  31. condition, ready for use.

  33. Power Saver requires a display adapter and monitor that conform
  34. to the VESA DPMS hardware and software interface standards.  Most
  35. display adapters and computer displays that conform to the U.S.
  36. Environmental Protection Agency "Energy Star" program should be
  37. compatible with Power Saver.

  39. 2. READ THIS!

  41. Power Saver uses documented software interfaces of your
  42. computer's existing display adapter (video BIOS) to control your
  43. display's power usage.  Power Saver does not directly manipulate
  44. the display adapter hardware, nor does it use any undocumented or
  45. reverse engineered techniques.  Power Saver's author cannot be
  46. held responsible or liable for any damages or data loss that may
  47. occur when Power Saver uses your existing display adapter BIOS
  48. routines to change display power usage levels.

  52. Power Saver is supplied as is. Jim Mathews, the author, disclaims
  53. all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without
  54. limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for
  55. any purpose.  The author assumes no liability for damages, direct
  56. or consequential, which may result from the use of Power Saver.

  58. 4. LICENSE AND REGISTRATION
  59.  
  60. Power Saver for Windows 9x is not public domain software and it
  61. is not free software.  Power Saver is provided without cost
  62. strictly for evaluation purposes.  If you like Power Saver and
  63. wish to use it after a 30 day evaluation period, you must
  64. register your copy of the program and pay a one-time U.S. $ 10.00
  65. per-copy registration fee.  The payment of the registration fee
  66. will license the use of one copy of the software on one computer
  67. at one time.

  69. You are encouraged to share Power Saver with friends and
  70. colleagues, but only in its original PWRSAVE2.EXE archive file
  71. format, and without modifications or additions of any kind.

  73. No remuneration of any kind may be charged by any individual or
  74. organization distributing this software without the express
  75. written consent of the author.  This restriction does not apply
  76. to organizations that distribute software (and/or "shareware")
  77. collections for "nominal" fees provided buyers are clearly
  78. informed they have not satisfied the registration requirement
  79. by "purchasing" the collection.

  86. 5. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  87.  
  88. Power Saver for Windows 9x is distributed in a single compressed
  89. self-extracting archive file named "PWRSAVE2.EXE".  To install Power
  90. Saver:
  91.  
  92.    1. If you haven't already done so, run the PWRSAVE2.EXE file.
  93.       It will prompt you for a temporary directory to save the
  94.       extracted files. Accepte the suggested directory or choose
  95.       another and click on the Unzip button. After the files have
  96.       been extracted (unziped) click on the Close button.
  97.  
  98.    2. Now run the INSTALL.EXE program in the directory where
  99.       PWRSAVE2.EXE files were extracted. For example, if the files
  100.       were extracted to the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory, run
  101.       C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\INSTALL.EXE.
  102.  
  103.    3. When prompted, chose a directory to hold the Power Saver
  104.       files. All Power Saver files with the exception of 
  105.       "Power Saver Screen Saver.scr" will be copied to the
  106.       selected directory.  "Power Saver Screen Saver.scr" will
  107.       be copied to your Windows system directory so it is
  108.       available to the Windows Display Control Panel (along
  109.       with all your other screen saver modules).

  111.    4. Answer the remaining questions regarding a Startup menu
  112.       item, viewing the README.TXT file (this file), and 
  113.       starting Power Saver now.
  114.  
  115.    5. After installation is complete, you can delete the files
  116.       in the temporary directory.  Make sure you've saved a copy of
  117.       "PWRSAVE2.EXE" for future use.
  118.  
  119. 6.  POWER SAVER REMOVAL
  120.  
  121. Power Saver can be easily removed from your system using the
  122. Windows 95 Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs" function.  To
  123. remove Power Saver:
  124.  
  125.    1. Open the Control Panel by clicking the Windows 9x "Start"
  126.       button and selecting the "Settings" and then the "Control
  127.       Panel" menu items.
  128.  
  129.    2. Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
  130.  
  131.    3. Locate and select the "Power Saver for Windows 9x (remove
  132.       only)" line in the list of programs that can be removed.
  133.  
  134.    4. Click the "Add/Remove..." button.
  135.
