  16. ■ Please read all of this document, as it contains important information you
  17.   may wish to refer to in future.   As the instructions for the accompanying
  18.   software may be lengthy, you should print out this document and refer to it
  19.   as you conduct the installation.

  32. ██ What to do:
  33.  
  34. There are two ways to install the new Windows drivers:
  35.  
  36.     ■ Using the Windows SETUP program (standard installation)
  37.     ■ Using the SPEA V7SETUP program  (quick installation, update)
  38.  
  39. These methods are described below:
  40.  
  41. ■ Using the Windows SETUP Program
  42.  
  43. 1.  Exit from Windows (using the DOS icon in Windows is not sufficient !)
  44. 2.  Log onto your WINDOWS directory.
  45. 3.  Type the following: SETUP
  46.     This will start Windows' configuration utility.
  47. 4.  Choose the DISPLAY menu, and select "Other Requires disk provided...)".
  48. 5.  Insert driver update disk and type in the disk drive name as required.
  49. 6.  Select the driver you require, and follow the on-screen prompts.
  50.  
  51. ≡ Installation complete.

  53. ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
  54.  
  55. ■ Using the SPEA V7SETUP program
  56.  
  57. ■ WARNING: Use this method only if you are currently using the standard VGA
  58.        display driver for Windows, as it is not good pratice to overwrite
  59.        a driver that is currently being used.
  60.  
  61. 1.  Start Windows and look at the Program Manager's title bar.
  62. 2.  Select the FILE menu, and in that menu pick RUN.
  63. 3.  Type "A:\V7SETUP"or "B:\V7SETUP" (without the quotes !) and
  64.     press the Enter key.
  65. 4.  The V7SETUP program will load from the floppy disk.
  66. 5.  You need only select the driver settings you prefer, then pick the
  67.     OKAY button.   The new driver will then be installed for you.
  68.     If you encounter any error massages or prompts, please refer to the
  69.     "██ Installation tips" section further in this file.
  70.  
  71. 6.  Please read the following notes for further information about the
  72.     installation:
  73.

  75. ■  When updating any existing drivers via SPEA V7SETUP, the program SPEAview
  76.    will not be installed automatically.   SPEAview will be installed in
  77.    your WINDOWS directory, but you will need to use EXPAND (a utility
  78.    that ships with Windows) to expand the SPEAview file into its working
  79.    form.
  80.    Do this as follows:
  81.    1. Log onto your WINDOWS directory.
  82.    2. Type the following: EXPAND SPEAVIEW.EXE SPEAVIEW.NEW
  83.    3. Type the following: DEL SPEAVIEW.EXE
  84.    4. Type the following: REN SPEAVIEW.NEW SPEAVIEW.EXE
  85.    Please refer you MicroSoft Windows documentation for information about how
  86.    to drag-and-drop SPEAview from FILE MANAGER into an application group.

  88. ■  The BigWin driver uses VESA in some resolutions modes as well.   
  89.    So, if VESA support is required, a small memory resident program
  90.    should be executed. 
  91.    Install the MIRAGE utilities (from disk 1 of x).
  92.    OR:
  93.    Copy from this disk 'Drivers for Windows' the program V7MIRVBE.EXE 
  94.    on your harddisk and insert the program call in your AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  95.    file.

  97. ≡ Installation complete.

  99. ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  101. ██ Installation tips:
  102.  
  103. ■ During first installation the driver will be installed with the 
  104.   lowest possible refresh rate at the chosen resolution.
  105.   If you use a high-class multi-sync monitor and you choose a
  106.   resolution 1024x768 and above, synchronisation problems may occur.
  107.   To prevent this, please choose at first the resolution
  108.   640x480. Afterwards you can change to the preferred resolution and
  109.   refresh rate with the utility V7SETUP, witch appears automatically 
  110.   after starting Windows.
  111.     
  112. ■ While installing the Windows drivers, you may be prompted for the
  113.   "V7-MIRAGE Driver for Windows disk" and the drive A:\ will be
  114.   displayed. When this happens, enter "B:\" if this diskette is in the
  115.   B: drive.  
  116.   If "Problem with disk drive A:" message is displayed, and the 
  117.   installation disk is in drive B:, press ESC twice, and re-enter "B:"
  118.   in the space provided.
  119.   The cause for these inquiries is a Microsoft WINDOWS routine.
  120.  
  121. ■ Installing graphical drivers for Windows and Virus Check Programs
  122.   Virus check programs, such as the DOS 6.0 internal one, which search
  123.   for changes at *.exe and *.com files, detect changes at the file
  124.   win.com after installing the SPEA V7 BigWin driver. This is not a
  125.   virus, because while installing the driver, driver supplements will
  126.   be saved in this file.

  128. ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  130. ██ Known restictions:
  131.  
  132. ■ The SPEA V7 BigWin Driver may not be used in 80286 based systems. 
  133.  
  134. ■ VDD limitation:
  135.   Cannot execute any VGA graphics modes in a windowed mode. The XGA driver
  136.   supplied by Microsoft has a similiar limitation.  
  137.  
  138. ■ True Color:
  139.   If you use more than 15 icons in one program group, a message will tell you 
  140.   that not all symbols are converted correctly. These symbols will be
  141.   displayed in black. This is caused by a Microsoft Program Manager
  142.   limitation.
  143.  
  144. ■ The V7-MIRAGE card 2Mb update is no longer being encouraged.   This is for
  145.   the following reasons:
  146.   
  147.   (i)  This upgrade now only offers two extra interlaced display modes.
  148.   (ii) Changes in the V7-Mirage hardware layout, with BIOS 4.00 or higher,
  149.        mean that the card may fail to operate correctly with the 2Mb upgrade.
  150.  
  151.   This has been caused by changes made by S3 Inc. to its 86C801/805 chip
  152.   design and BIOS features.
  153.

  156. ██ When you have finished:
  157.  
  158. Store this disk set with your other SPEA disk set(s) for future reference.
  159. If, for whatever reason, you need to install your current release of SPEA
  160. software again, you may need to make use of the software on this disk set.

  173. ■ You can view this file in any text editor, such as MS-DOS "EDIT", however
  174.   SPEA has its own easy-to-use file viewer, called "SHOW".   SHOW comes with
  175.   most SPEA software.   Use it by typing the following:

  179. ■ The software supplied on this disk set can only be used if you have already
  180.   installed the supporting software utilities for the SPEA card you are using.

  182. ■ The software in this set, plus a variety of the very latest software from 
  183.   SPEA Software AG, is normally available via SPEA's international BBS
  184.   service, the number for which is:

  188.   This service operates simultaneously in 7 languages, 24 hours a day, through
  189.   many telephone lines accessed automatically via the above number.   You can

  192.   manuals for our software, in "PageMaker 5" or Postscript print file format.
