  21. It is assumed you have an account on an InterNet computer with direct
  22. TCP/IP access, and that said computer has a TELNET user program that lets
  23. you connect to other TCP/IP hosts.
  24.  
  25. To obtain archie service is very simple. From North America, use TELNET
  26. to connect to host quiche.cs.mcgill.ca (132.206.2.3 or 132.206.51.1) or
  27. archie.ans.net (147.225.1.2), then log in as archie (lower case, no
  28. password). The procedure is the same in other continents using the
  29. appropriate local site: Australia: sol.deakin.oz.au (128.184.1.1) or
  30. maybe just deakin.oz.au; Europe: nic.funet.fi (128.214.6.100).

  32. Once you get connected you can type HELP to get detailed online
  33. documentation, but mostly you need only a few commands to get started:

  35. set maxhits 20
  36. (This causes any search that results in more than 20 matches to stop at
  37. 20. This prevents the search program from running for a very long time
  38. finding thousands of matches but with no output, then suddenly being done
  39. with the search and sending you the matches for the next hour. Better to
  40. have it abort after just the first 20 matches and show them to you, then
  41. you can see why it's getting so many matches and perhaps give a more
  42. precise query next time that doesn't result in so many matches.)

  45. (This causes any search to be done in case-insensitive mode. The default, if
  46. this command isn't given first, is to be case-sensitive like Unix.)

  48. prog <FilenameKwExp>
  49. (Search for a file (called 'program' here) by name. If you see a program
  50. announced by name, but the host where it was announced is unavailable,
  51. you can see what other hosts have that program. This is also good for
  52. browsing. You pick one program that you think is likely to be copied to
  53. many places, and you find where it is located. Then you connect to each
  54. of those places and browse around to see what else of a similar nature is
  55. there.) (The expression is a 'regular expresion' from Unix infamity. It's
  56. case-sensitive, so if you want any case of "dog" you must say
  57. [Dd][Oo][Gg].)

  59. whatis <TopicSubstring>
  60. (Search for a file by keywords in its description. I hardly ever use this
  61. command, and when I tried it it didn't work for me, so I won't say much
  62. further, but you might want to try it sometime.)

  197. You'll get back instructions for using the above commands via email,
  198. but basically you simply send the normal commands such as PROG ...

  204. - How to find where files are located on BitNet and email servers? There
  205. is at present no general index or finder-service of such files. The best
  206. I can suggest is look at the indexes of interest groups and see if any of
  207. them are on a relevant topic, then ask the fileserver or mailing-list
  208. maintainer where the files are. (Send HELP to the fileserver for a list
  209. of commands.) See MaasInfo.TopIndex for a list of those indexes and how
  210. to get them.

  212. - How to find general information about how to use servers, e-mail etc.?
  213. Usually sending HELP to a fileserver or listserver or ftpmail server etc.
  214. will cause a starting document and list of commands to be sent back to
  215. you via email. There are also some tutorials on use of these facilities.
