  12. What is garbo.uwasa.fi
  13. ----------------------

  15. In case you are not familiar with garbo.uwasa.fi MsDos archives here
  16. is first a brief outline. University  of  Vaasa,  Finland,  Sun  IPX
  17. SPARCstation  garbo.uwasa.fi  has  a  large  collection  of  PD  and
  18. shareware PC programs available  by  anonymous  FTP  (File  Transfer
  19. Protocol)  or  mail server. This repository is used extensively. For
  20. example in 1992 the total number of downloads from our archives  was
  21. over  2,600,000.  The number of different MsDos files was about 3200
  22. at the end of 1992. The Garbo  archives  are  also  available  on  a
  23. CD-ROM.

  25. The downloads are made worldwide by users  from  InterNet  sites  in
  26. Europe,  North  America,  Asia  and  Australia.  There are some 2000
  27. universities connected to InterNet, and there is also a great number
  28. of  business  enterprises which have an access. The UseNet newsgroup
  29. where the files are announced which are  uploaded  to  FTP  archives
  30. such  as  garbo.uwasa.fi was subscribed by over 70000 readers at the
  31. count made at the end of September 1993.

  34. General information to the authors
  35. ----------------------------------

  37. If you are an MsDos utility PD  or  SW  author  who  wishes  to  get
  38. included  on  this  list  you  are  most  welcome  to  email me your
  39. submission. Please note that your program(s)  should  be  reasonably
  40. well  established  and  must be non-trivial to merit an inclusion on
  41. this list.

  43. You  must have a sufficiently stable email address that is reachable
  44. on or from InterNet. For example authors without an InterNet address
  45. but  with  a Compuserve address are reachable from InterNet. You can
  46. send me email from Compuserve by applying send to
  47. ">INTERNET:ts@uwasa.fi".

  49. Your   program   should   preferably   fall   within   the  eligible
  50. garbo.uwasa.fi MsDos PD & SW categories. In practice this means that
  51. the  addresses of the authors of (solely) recreational games are not
  52. solicited. I  am  hoping  that  someone  else  would  take  it  upon
  53. him/herself   to  compile  a  similar  list  for  games  authors.  A
  54. corresponding Windows' program authors list is maintained  by  Chris
  55. Marriott (chris@chrism.demon.co.uk).

  57. Having your program on garbo.uwasa.fi archives or submitting  it  to
  58. us  is *NOT* a precondition for the inclusion of your information to
  59. this authors' address list. Naturally we  hope,  however,  that  you
  60. will  keep  us up to date about the updates of your program if it is
  61. on the Garbo archives.

  63. The file garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/UPLOAD.INF has information on  uploading
  64. to  our  MsDos  FTP  archives. If you wish to have it and you do not
  65. know how to go about getting it, you are most welcome  to  email  me
  66. for further, prerecorded information.

  68. If  you  for  some  reason should later wish your name to be removed
  69. from this list, please just let me know then.

  75.  - Please fill in.  That way the possibility of me making errors
  76.    is diminished.
  77.  - This is above all an address list.  Therefore the "Program:" line
  78.    should have your major or preferred product including a suitable
  79.    description in a manner that does not exceed column 68 on the
  80.    single line reserved for this purpose.  (Thus only one line).
  81.  - Yet, if possible, be specific about your product.  Rather than
  82.    just stating e.g.

  84.    you might want to state

  86.  - When you kindly fill this in for me, please do not use tabs, and
  87.    start from column 13 as the ruler indicates.

  89.    many products, please choose.
