    Purpose: Discussion of the Scandinavian rock group "a-ha" which burst
    onto the pop scene in 1985 with their worldwide top-10 hit "Take on Me".
    Their suceeding 4 records did not get very much publicty from their
    record label in the US, but they have had #1 singles in the U.K.  This
    list will discuss the group, their albums & their record label.

    Purpose: Discussion of the ABC Programming Language and its

accordion

    Purpose: The accordion mailing list has been created as a means for
    individuals with an interest in accordions and accordion music to
    communicate over the internet.  This will be an unmoderated mailing
    list accessible to everyone with a connected computer.  All aspects
    of acquiring, playing, collecting, repairing, and discography of the
    accordion will be fair topics of conversation.  Accordions of all
    types and designs, including concertinas and button accordions will
    be discussed.  The general philosophy will be that we can all learn
    a great deal if we each share what we know with the other members of
    the e-mail list.

Acid Jazz

    Purpose: This is a manually operated mailing list, not a reflector, for
    the discussion of Acid Jazz: a relatively new form of dance music
    popular in European clubs and at raves around the world.  Acid Jazz is
    often a combination of jazz with another style of dance music, which

    Purpose: This list is used for announcements of Ada-Belgium

    Purpose:  A forum for the discussion of agricultural simulation
    models of all types. Plant growth, micro-metorlogical, soil hydrology,
    transport, economic, farm systems, and many other models may be
    discussed. Problems and advantages of computer simulation models for
    agriculture as well as the role played by models in the future of
    agriculture. The list is unmoderated.

    Purpose: Discussion relating to the application of artificial
    intelligence techniques to natural World problems, arising in such
    areas as natural resource management, defence, mining, etc.

    Purpose: A distribution list for people who can't read
    sci.med.aids.  Covers predominately medical issues of AIDS.  Some
    discussion of political and social issues.  Postings to AIDSNEWS
    and Health InfoCom News mailing lists are also carried.

    Unlike info-aids, postings to [e-mail] are
    NON-confidential.  The average number of postings to aids is about
    2 per day.  The average size of articles is very large
    (statistics, news summaries, etc.)  sci.med.aids and
    [e-mail] are moderated. (see also "info-aids" mailing
    list)

Aikido-L

Ajax Amsterdam

alife

    Purpose: The alife mailing list is for communications regarding
    artificial life, a formative interdisciplinary field involving
    computer science, the natural sciences, mathematics, medicine and
    others.  The recent book _Artificial Life_, Christopher Langton, ed.,
    Addison Wesley, 1989 introduces the scope of artificial life as a field
    of study.  Alife was chartered in February 1990 at the Second Artificial
    Life Workshop, held in Santa Fe & organized by the Center for Nonlinear
    Studies at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe
    Institute.  The list is intended primarily for low-volume, high-content
    scientific correspondence and as a publically accessible forum for the
    interested members of the public.  Membership as of July 1990 includes
    over 1,200 addresses on four continents.  There is an FTP-accessible
    archives/repository of past traffic, software and papers.  The list
    is maintained by the Artificial Life Research Group, Computer Science
    Department, Lindley Hall 101, Indiana University Bloomington, IN 47405.
    There are conditions on redistribution of the list in order to minimize
    any misunderstanding or exaggeration concerning this new area of study.

    Purpose: To discuss non-qwerty keyboards, their usefulness,
    availability and problems.  There is an associated ftp site at
    ftp.gu.uwa.edu.au:/pub/alt-keyboards which contains dvorak
    keyboard drivers for a variety of computers and operating
    systems.

    Purpose: For exchanging ideas relevant to alternate tunings: just
    intonation; paratactical tunings; experimental musical instrument
    design; non-standard equal temperaments; MIDI tuning system exclusive
    specs; concert postings; gamelan tunings and other non-western tunings;
    historical tunings; the experimental tunings of Harry Partch, Lou
    Harrison, Martin Bartlett, James Tenney, and so on; software reports;
    recordings; books; research sources, etc. etc. etc.

alternates

    Purpose: Mail.alternates is a mail list for people who advocate,
    and/or practice an open sexual lifestyle. Its members are
    primarily bisexual men and women, and their SO's. Mail.alternates
    is intended as a forum, and support group for adult men and women
    who espouse their freedom of choice and imagination in human
    sexual relations, no matter what their orientaion. Those who are
    offended by frank, and uninhibited discussions relating to sexual
    issues should not subscribe.

Alternative Energy

    Purpose: The AE Alternative Energy Discussion Mailing List is
    intended to provide a forum to discuss the current state of the
    art and future direction of alternative energy sources that are
    renewable and sustainable.  An alternative energy source is taken
    to include solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, electro-chemical,
    hydro-electric, or any renewable and sustainable energy source.

    Purpose: You are invited to joint "AltInst", a new email list on
    Alternative Institutions.  AltInst is solely for proposing and
    critiquing alternative institutions for various walks of life.
    Alternative ways to run conversations, countries, households, markets,
    offices, romances, schools, etc. are all fair game.

    AltInst is open to folks from any political persuasion, but general
    political flaming/discussion is forbidden.  Skip the theory and just
    tell us your vision of how something could be different, and how that
    would work.  Many of us are truly excited to hear about creative
    well-considered suggestions, no matter what the source, but quickly
    bored by both ideological is-to-is-not flaming, and partisan rah-rahs

    medicine research. Pertinent topics include new findings, methodological
    issues, announcements of upcoming research conferences and seminars, and
    requests for information or collaboration regarding proposed studies.
    Because we wish to promote interdisciplinary communication in a broad
    and rapidly expanding field, we welcome contributions from academically
    trained researchers, and both conventional and complementary
    practitioners. It is not intended to be a resource for recommending
    particular therapies or practitioners for individuals.

    monthly compilation of news stories concerning the UK radio
    industry.

Amazons International

    Purpose: Amazons International is an electronic digest newsletter
    for and about Amazons (physically and psychologically strong
    assertive women who are not afraid to break free from traditional
    ideas about gender roles, femininity and the female physique) and
    their friends and lovers.  Amazons International is dedicated to
    the image of the female hero in fiction and in fact, as it is
    expressed in art and literature, in the physiques and feats of
    female athletes, in sexual values and practices, and provides
    information, discussion and a supportive environment for these
    values and issues.  Gender role traditionalists and others who are
    opposed to Amazon ideals should not subscribe.

amend2-discuss
amend2-info

    Purpose: Colorado voted in an amendment to their state
    constitution which revokes any existing gay/lesbian/bisexual
    civil rights legislation and prohibits the drafting of any
    new legislation.  The amendment was spearheaded by a right-
    wing organization inappropriately self-named Colorado Family
    Values (CFV).  It is our understanding that they have no
    intention of stopping their hate campaign here; they intended
    to push for legislation with a stronger discriminatory flavor
    here in Colorado and surrounding states.

    Two mail/news groups have been created in response to this
    discriminatory amendment.

    amend2-discuss is for people who are discussing the
    implications and issues surrounding the passing of amendment 2.

    amend2-info is a moderated mailing list for people interested
    in information on the implication and issues of #2.

    Sending mail to either mailing list has the effect of also
    posting the message to the corresponding shadow newsgroup.
    We encourage people to use the mailing list address when
    disseminating information so that those people who are on the
    mailing list but who do not have access to news can benefit
    from the discussion/information.

Amiga CDROM

AMOS

    Purpose: To discuss programming in AMOS Creator, AMOS Pro, and Easy
    AMOS for the Amiga computer.  All types of programming are welcome:
    Games, demos, applications, etc.  To subscribe, just send email to

Amway Distributors

    Purpose: A list devoted to Amway distributors around the world.  Topics
    include book, tape, and function reviews and quotes, product
    information and questions, and a weekly reposting of the "Tidbits from
    Tom" Amvox message.  Private list with no direct affiliation to the
    Amway Corporation.  All currently active distributors are invited to
    participate.

Analogue Heaven

    Purpose: The Analogue Heaven mailing list, founded in late 1992, is an
    unmoderated mailing list catering to the needs of those interested in
    vintage analogue electronic music equipment. Frequent for-sale items,
    repair tips, equipment modifications, ASCII & GIF schematics, and
    general contemporary & historical discussion of new and old analogue
    synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines, and effects units are common
    topics of the mailing list.  There is an FTP/Gopher site located at
    cs.uwp.edu with past discussions on various machines, a definitive
    guide to Roland synths, patch editors, modification schematics,
    GIFs/JPEGs of vintage synths, as well a few sound samples of some of
    the gear itself.

anneal

    Purpose: Discussion of simulated annealing techniques and
    analysis, as well as other related issues (stochastic
    optimization, Boltzmann machines, metricity of NP-complete move
    spaces, etc).

    Membership is restricted to those doing active research in
    simulated annealing or related areas.  Current membership is
    international, and about half of the members are published
    authors.  The list itself is unmoderated.

appware-info

    Purpose: Novell Inc.'s AppWare is a layer of software that improves
    and accelerates the process of creating and deploying cross-platform
    network and standalone applications. Appware-info provides a forum for
    discussion of issues related to the software. AppWare, and the
    discussions on appware-info, encompass the Visual AppBuilder, AppWare
    Foundation, AppWare Foundation Developer's Kit, AppWare Loadable
    Modules (ALMs), ALM Software Developer's Kit, and the AppWare Bus
    Toolkit developer's tools from Novell. AppWare is based on technology
    from Serius Corp. and Software Transformation, Inc. Questions about
    products from either of those companies are also fair game on the
    mailing list.

    Topics include simple programming questions, tips for program
    efficiency, quirks of and complaints about the environment or tools,
    the process of writing a new ALMs or function, or any other question
    your active mind can dream up. We will also entertain questions about
    third party enhancements to AppWare and issues related to
    cross-platform and networked application development.

    Anyone is welcome to contribute. To post a message to the list, send

    [e-mail] is automatically distributed to every
    subscriber of the list.

    The list is maintained on parallel.com (198.80.0.2). An anonymous ftp
    site for AppWare-related software and information is also maintained
    at parallel.com; look in the /parallel/appware directory.

    Archives: Archives of the appware-info mailing list messages are
    available from the parallel.com anonymous ftp site. Archive files
    are created for each month, and are named used the form:

     appware.archive.YYMM

    where YY is the year and MM is the month. The archive files are in
    the /parallel/appware/appware-info-archives directory.

    Purpose: A public news wire for items relating to Animal Rights and
    Welfare.

    Appropriate postings to AR-News include: posting a news item,

    for information.  Discussions on AR-News will NOT be allowed and we
    ask that any commentary either be taken to AR-Talk or to private E-mail.

    Currently, no resources are available for archiving this list.

AR-Talk

    Purpose: An unmoderated list for the discussion of Animal Rights.
    Peter Singer's book "Animal Liberation" proposes a "New Ethics for
    our Treatment of Animals" and many activist groups, such as PETA
    (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), regard this as the
    "Bible of the Animal Rights movement".  Consumers and researches
    alike are facing new questions concerning the human animals' treatment
    of the rest of the animal kingdom.  The purpose of this list is to
    provide students, researchers, and activists, a forum for discussing
    issues like:

argentina

    Purpose:  Mailing list for general discussion and information.
    By joining you can learn about how to make those patties (empanadas)
    that you miss so much, you can discuss on how to 'cebar un buen mate',
    and of course, on how to solve Argentina's most outstanding problems.
    We don't have a regular news service yet, but some members send every
    now and then a briefing. To join send name, e-mail, phone number,

    Spanish.

    Purpose: Arlist is an open unmoderated mailing list to provide a
    forum for discussing action research and its use in a variety of
    disciplines and situations.

    As its name implies, action research is often a suitable research
    paradigm when both action outcomes and research outcomes are
    required.  It is usually (but perhaps not always) cyclic,
    participative, and qualitative.  This allows it to be responsive
    enough to use in field situations, and robust enough to achieve
    valid information and interpretations.

    Appropriate topics on arlist include (but are not limited to) --
    o  philosophical and methodological issues in action research
    o  specific action research methodologies and methods
    o  similar approaches such as soft systems methodology
    o  the use of action research for evaluation
    o  actual case studies of action research
    o  the use of action research methodologies for thesis research
    o  increasing the rigour of action research

Aviator

    the flight simulation program from Artificial Horizons, Inc.
    Aviator runs on Sun workstations with the GX graphics accelerator
    option.  The list is unmoderated at present, and is unaffiliated
    with AHI.

    Its charter is simply to facilitate communication among users of
    Aviator.  Note that it is *not* intended to communicate with the
    *providers* of Aviator.  All mail received at the submission address
    will be reflected to all the subscribers of the list.
