More and more surprises await us. Now we can understand why Beethoven did not indicate a return to and repetition of the scherzo section of the movement. The legato theme has been transformed to almost staccato playing, accentuated by the fact that all the strings play pizzicato.
This is, without doubt, one of the most enchanting passages in the whole symphony. Listen again to how it begins, before we enter the enchanted realms which await us.
