  10. This variation is based on note values which move twice as fast as those used by Beethoven for the first variation.

  12. Here, for the first time, the accompaniment plays the rhythm of the "Fate Motive" only in the last two bars.

  14. In the first version of the theme, there was no accompaniment except for the plucked (pizzicato) double basses.  In the first variation, the clarinets and violins joined this accompaniment.  The second variation is further enriched by flutes, oboes, and horns, but without clarinets.
