  5. A hushed, mysterious transitional passage leads back to the dominant of A flat major.

  10. The triumphal atmosphere gradually dies away into a pathetic and profound feeling, which at first seems to lead nowhere.

  12. This is only one of the mysterious passages Beethoven has in store for us in this Symphony, perhaps preparing us for the transition from the third to the last movement.

  14. It is played by the bassoons and all the strings (excluding the double basses) in contrary motion.
  15.  
  16. This passage ends the first section of the second movement in a chromatic harmony, and leads to the dominant  of A flat major.  A flat major is the principal key of this movement, and it is in this key that the first variation will begin.
