The violins select one ascending and one descending step from the 4-bar melody, play it twice in sequence as if carrying out a dialogue with themselves, and thus form a new 4-bar melody.
Now the violins reduce the melody to its first two bars, play them 5 times, mounting the tension with a gradual crescendo, and end the second theme on a loud chord.
The recurrence of the rhythmic motive intensifies the tension up to the fortissimo chord, which is played by the entire orchestra.
