The solo horn commences with the rhythmic motive, adding to it two more long notes, which form part of the dominant chord of E flat major upon which the second theme is based.
Take a look at the following example and see how much the first two initial pronouncements of the motive and the bridge have in common. They are both based on four notes played out in the same directions, but with enlarged intervals. And, they both comprise the same two middle notes.
Try to remember these two notes, for they play a very important role in the Development section.
