Three rapidly descending sequences are played. The first sequence is played by the violins, the second by the 2nd violins, and the third by the violas. A fourth motive is played by the lower strings (cellos and double basses) in a contrary direction, thereby halting this avalanche on the tonic.
These sequences are played twice. Two harmonies are produced by each of the "falling" sequences (with the aid of the sustained long notes at the end of each motive): the first three sequences produce a dominant chord (G-B-F), and the fourth sequence returns to the home key of C minor.
