Literally means sliding. In music it is the execution of of rapid scales by playing all the frequencies between the first and last notes. In stringed instruments this effect is produced by sliding the fingers on the strings while bowing. This effect is especially characteristic to the trombone technique. In other instruments, such as the piano,or the xylophone,by rapidly playing an ascending or descending scale the effect isproduced but does not include all the frequencies between the two tones.
