In a letter from Beethoven to Schlesinger, we learn that for some time the composer suffered from an attack of rheumatism. As this lasted for many weeks, a large number of Beethoven's close friends feared for him. It appears that an attack of jaundice took the place of his former sickness, and this caused great harm to his liver.
One night, Beethoven, seeming to have forgotten where he was, was stopped by a policeman. At the time, Beethoven was wearing a very old coat, and no hat. When asked what he was doing, Beethoven answered: "I am Beethoven". But, the policeman was certain he was a vagabond and said: "Of course, why not? You are a tramp! Beethoven does not look like this!" After passing some hours in prison, Beethoven was finally recognized and apologies were made.
