Sometime during this year, Beethoven's three Trios Op.1 were performed at the house of Prince Lichnowsky, to whom they were dedicated. Haydn was there too and was very enthusiastic, except about the third Trio (in c minor), which he advised Beethoven not to publish. Beethoven did not agree with him, and even believed that envy and jealousy were the real basis for this criticism. The truth was that Haydn was certain that Beethoven's bold novelties would be misunderstood by the Viennese public.

In a letter from Fischenich to Charlotte von Schiller, we read: "I am enclosing with this a setting of the "Feuerfarbe" on which I would like to have your opinion. It is by a young man of this place (Bonn) whose musical talents are universally praised and whom the Elector has sent to Haydn in Vienna. He proposes also to compose Schiller's "Freude" strophe by strophe. I expect something perfect for as far as I knew him he is wholly devoted to the great and the sublime". This was written 30(!) years before Beethoven completed his Ninth Symphony. This reflects, more than anything else, what he wrote to a friend in 1822.

Beethoven never forgot the great help and encouragement his teacher in Bonn, Neefe, gave him. This is clearly reflected in his letter from Vienna: "I thank you for the advice you have so often given me about making progress in my divine art. If I ever become a great man, you too shall have an important share in my success".
