After the death of his mother, Beethoven found himself faced with all his family's problems, including the education of his younger brothers, and life with an alcoholic father. As a result of attempts to petition for at least half of his father's salary, his petition was granted by the Elector on November 20, 1789, thus making Ludwig the head of the family household.
