Although not a prodigy like Mozart, the ten year old Beethoven became an able professional. He thoroughly studied the piano, the organ, the violin, and the viola. His father understood that his son was in need of more competent teachers, and so the child passed from one teacher to another until, sometime in 1780, he was lucky enough to become Christian Gottlob Neefe's pupil in music as well as in composition.
