I. First things first....
I have tried to get the most current information available to create and
maintain this listing. I have found conflicting info from both the manufactures
and what is really out there and in those cases there are two listings for that
drive. Also, a drive model maybe released and sometime later has been improved
to make them faster or larger, in those cases there again will be two listings
for that perticular drive. Many drives will be advertised and even in the spec
sheets will have a certain number of cylinders but can be formatted with more
than what is listed, in this case I am following the manufacturer's specs but
depending on who formatted the drive they may have used more.
The point in the above paragraph is to say that I am not responsible if there
are any deletions in the list, or for any problems or omissions you may encounter.
There are no guarantees or warranties (implied or otherwise) by use of this list.
Now for the good news, This list is free to anyone or organization that wants
to use it. Any individual, company, disk vendor, and user group can distribute
this list on disk only and can sell it for a processing fee not to exceed $12 per
disk, following the following guidlines....
1. The phone number for the South Texas BBS I is not removed.
2. My name and the copyright are not removed, and this header is not altered.
3. The following files are left included with the disk or compressed file..
1. README.1ST - Latest information for this file and info.
2. HDINFO.PRN - The listing of hard drives.
3. README.2ND - This file
4. Printed lists SHALL NOT be distributed NOR will altered listings, without
prior approval from Ray Martin, Martin Development Services, or from one
of the associated sysops from the South Texas BBS I.
II. Revision History
HD0591R4.xxx <-- extension can be .ARC, .ARJ, .LZH, .PAK, .ZIP, OR .ZOO
^ ^ ^+- Revision of listing
| +-- Year of issue
+---- Month of issue
The listing report is in it's 4th revision. The report has been expanded to
include many fields that I have been keeping but have not included until now.
II. Subscriptions are no longer required
But donations to keep the list going are welcome. Feel free to send what-
ever you think the list is worth to you, or please donate to the charity of
your choice in the name of HDInfo.
Well here we are in the fourth year of distribution, the drive listing has
grown from 72 drives to now to list 1688 drives. I have now started the floppy
drive list but it will not be distributed like this list for another few months
as it is far from being ready.
To get a copy of the files below send a self-addressed disk mailer and the
disk format you want and I will send you a copy of the files. I am no longer
taking anything for the files. Pleas wait 3 to 6 weeks for the disks.
Files included on disks are...
HDINFO - Hard drive listing
FDINFO - Floppy drive listing
ATINFO - BIOS information
SIZES - Comparible sizes according to heads, cylenders, and
sectors
Choice of media includes 360k 5.25", 720k 3.5", or 1.2M 5.25"
The listing and associated files will not fit on 360k floppies anymore,
you will need to send at least 2 disks.
I have moved from Foxbase to Rapid File now on to the new Reflex to maintain
the information for the list. I have found that Reflex is great for what I am
doing and the list is now printed from the report writer found in Reflex, prior
to this I was creating the report using R&R Relational Report Writer probably the
best report generators for the dBASE file type.
III. How to use the listing
The list is sorted by manufacter, disk controller type, and model number...
Manufacturer
=================
1. ALPS ELECTRIC <-- Manufacter's name
2. MFM <-- Controller type
3. DRND-10A <-- Model number
1. Manufacter's name
I have tried here to be as accurate as possible, the main problem is that they
come and go, get bought by other manufacters, or distribute drives under different
names. One such case is that of CDC and Seagate, Seagate bought CDC's stock and plant
and now distribute drives under both model designations. Seagate has also purchased other
drive makers and I will strive to include those new model numbers.
In the case of duplicate models for different manufacters, this keeps the list up
as far as old drives and new drives.
2. Controller type
This is the controller type as advertised for that drive. The types are as follows...
1. MFM - formats drive to 17 sectors per track.
2. RLL - Formats drive from 26 to 28 sectors per track.
3. IDE - AT drive bus (16 bit) controller on drive, interface in slot. 17 to 34 spt.
4. ESDI - Formats drive from 17 to 52 sectors per track depending on controller.
5. SCSI - Formats drive from 17 to 80 sectors per track depending on controller.
6. Other - When I don't know or is one of the other recording methods used.
7. N/A - I don't have the controller type for these drives at all. (UnKnown)
3. Model numbers/designations
I have listed all the model numbers as I have received information for, some cases
include duplicate models and this is due to a model being upgraded and is different than
the original listing. In several cases the model number either was changed or a new designation
added and I have basically the same drive listed twice. Again this is for the tech that
finds the older drive in a machine.
Heads
=====
2 <-- Number of heads
4. Heads
This is the number of data heads used. Several drives may have one or two servo heads.
Cyls
====
615 <-- Number of cylinders
5. Cyls
This is the number of cylinders advertised for the drive, many new drives can actually
format many more cylinders but may not be reliable as the drive's electronics are normally
set for the advertised cylinders.
Sect
====
17 <-- Sectors per track
6. Sect
This is the number of sectors laid down during formatting using the controller type (CT).
Write
PreComp <-- Write precompensation cyl.
=======
7. Write PreComp
This is the Write PreCompensation, this is important on older drives due to both the
electronics and the actual disk media, it was required to compensate the write signal on
the inner cylinders of the drives. Not required on todays new drives.
Reduced
Write <-- Reduced write cyl.
=======
8. Write
This is the reduced write cylinder, again just like for PreComp is not required on todays
drives.
High <-- Height of drive (F=Full H=Half T=Third)
====
9. High
This is the height of the drive.
Access
=======
10. Access
This is the advertised average access time. In some cases where I didn't have the info is
the time that I got from using CoreTest.
Size
Megs
=======
11. Size/Megs
This is the calculated figure using the number of heads * cylinders * sectors * 512.
An example.. ((4x615)x17)x512 = (21411840/1000)/1024 = 20.91 meg
Dim
=====
12. DIM
This is the size of the disk used, like a floppy it can be anywhere from as large as 10 inches
to the nice 3.5" drives
Auto
Park
====
13. Auto Park
This was for drives that featured AutoParking of the heads. This is a standard feature now.
Act.
Type
====
14. Act. Type
This is the head actuator type. (VC=Voice Coil, SM=Stepper motor)
Recording
Method
=========
15. Recording Method
This is the method actually used for the controller/drive type.
MTBF
=====
16. MTBF
Mean Time Between Failures, how long you hope your drive lasts.
Power
Req.
======
17. Power Req.
This is the amount of wattage required to run the drive.
Trans
Rate
======
18. Trans Rate
This is the advertised data transfer rate for the controller interface type.
Comments
==========================
19. Comments
This is just a note or two I have added to each drive record, sometimes it contains useless info.
Notes
=====
20. Notes
Misc. notes referenced at the bottom of the last page.
Changed the sort order because it wasn't sorting correctly.
