  38. This file is for users downloading the Cakewalk Professional for
  39. Windows Demo from a BBS.
  40.  
  41. To use the demo, you must have an MPU-401 or compatible, Music Quest,
  42. or other MIDI interface or sound card with a Windows Multimedia
  43. Extensions driver.
  44.  
  45. The demo requires Windows 3.1.
  46.  
  47. The demo lets you load and play files, but is limited in that you
  48. may not save files.
  49.  
  50. The demo may be copied and distributed for free, but not resold.
  51. This demo software is provided for promotional purposes only, and
  52. under no warranty of any kind.

  56. PREPARING AN INSTALLATION DISKETTE FROM THE .ZIP FILE
  57.  
  58. To make downloading easier and faster, all of the installation files
  59. are packed in a single .ZIP file.  Use PKUNZIP to unpack the files to
  60. a diskette.  The diskette must be a 720K, 1.44 MB, or greater
  61. capacity floppy; a 360K diskette will NOT work.
  62.  
  63. When the instructions below refer to the Cakewalk Professional
  64. diskette, use the diskette you created.
  65.  
  66. IMPORTANT: The diskette will contain the SETUP program and a variety
  67. of compressed installation files.  These files are useless by
  68. themselves.  You must run SETUP so that it can uncompress the files,
  69. copy them to the correct locations on your hard drive, and perform
  70. other important installation tasks.  Please do not try to uncompress
  71. or copy files yourself; let SETUP do this.

  73. == Using a directory of your hard drive instead of a diskette
  74.  
  75. We recommend that you make an installation diskette as just
  76. described.  If you want to create a directory on your hard drive for
  77. the SETUP files, you may do that, but please read these instructions.
  78.  
  79. You will want to delete the directory after you are done, because you
  80. won't want the installation files and SETUP lying around.  So we
  81. recommend that you (1) make a new directory, (2) unzip there, and (3)
  82. be sure to tell SETUP to install to a DIFFERENT directory than the
  83. one where you unzipped.  That way, after a successful SETUP you can
  84. delete the temporary directory containing the unzipped installation
  85. files.  Step (3) is important because you don't want to end up with
  86. the uncompressed files and the compressed installation files all
  87. mixed up together.  SETUP proposes that the demo be installed in
  88. C:\WINCAKE, so if that's fine with you, create your temporary
  89. installation directory with some other name and you'll be all set.

  92. INSTALLATION
  93.  
  94. Installing and setting up the Cakewalk Professional Demo is easy, but
  95. it is important that you follow these instructions completely or the
  96. program may not operate correctly.

  98. Please print these instructions so that you may more easily perform
  99. the installation.

  102. === 1.  INSTALL WINDOWS 3.1 CORRECTLY
  103.  
  104. Before installing Cakewalk Professional, you should make sure that
  105. you've correctly installed Windows 3.1.
  106.  
  107. Try some of the sample programs that come with Windows.  If you
  108. experience any problems, try to resolve them through Microsoft
  109. Technical Support before proceeding to install Cakewalk Professional.
  110. Generally, it is easier for you to solve one problem at a time, and
  111. it will be much easier for us to help you if you have a reliable
  112. Windows installation.

  114. Avoid Windows 3.0 video drivers: You should use the latest Windows
  115. 3.1 version of the driver for your video adapter.  Most 3.1 drivers
  116. are faster, which makes all Windows programs faster.  More
  117. importantly, some 3.0 video drivers may cause problems when used with
  118. Windows 3.1.  For example, if you click on a button in Cakewalk
  119. Professional or some other application, and the application crashes,
  120. the problem might be a Windows 3.0 video driver.

  124. === 2.  RUN CAKEWALK PROFESSIONAL DEMO SETUP

  126. 1. Start Windows.
  127.  
  128. 2. Insert the Cakewalk Professional disk 1 in the drive, and close
  129. the drive door.
  130.  
  131. 3. From Windows Program Manager, open the File menu and select the
  132. Run command.
  133.  
  134. 4. In the dialog box, type A:SETUP, and press ENTER.
  135.  
  136. Note: If you put the installation disk in drive B:, then of course
  137. you need to enter "B:SETUP".  Or, if you made a directory on your
  138. hard drive for the installation files, enter the pathname to SETUP.
  139. For example, if you made a C:\INSTALL directory for SETUP and the
  140. other installation files, enter "C:\INSTALL\SETUP".

  142. Note: The SETUP program may take up to two or three minutes to load
  143. from the floppy disk.

  145. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  148. === 3.  READ README.WRI
  149.  
  150. Cakewalk Professional SETUP installs an icon for the README.WRI file.
  151. Double-click on this icon to run Windows Write and load the Cakewalk
  152. Professional README.WRI file.  This file contains important
  153. information about changes or additions after the documentation went
  154. to press.  Please read it!

  158. === 4.  INSTALL A DRIVER
  159.  
  160. If you've already installed Windows 3.1 multimedia MIDI or sound card
  161. drivers, you may skip this section.
  162.  
  163. Cakewalk Professional uses the Multimedia Extensions in Windows 3.1
  164. to talk to MIDI interfaces and sound cards.  The Multimedia
  165. Extensions provide a way for applications to talk to different kinds
  166. of MIDI interfaces and sound cards through drivers.  For Cakewalk
  167. Professional to work with your device, you must install a driver.
  168.  
  169. Use one of the drivers that is included with Windows 3.1 (for
  170. example, MPU-401 or Sound Blaster), or, install a driver that is
  171. provided by the manufacturer.

  173. 1. Run the Windows Control Panel program.
  174.  
  175. 2. Double-click on the "Drivers" icon.
  176.  
  177. 3. Press the Add button.
  178.  
  179. 4. Select a driver from the list.  If your MIDI or sound card device
  180. came with a diskette containing a Multimedia Extensions driver,
  181. select "Unlisted or Updated Driver" and insert the driver diskette
  182. when prompted.

  184. Note: The Cakewalk Professional diskette may include one or more
  185. drivers.  Please see README.WRI for up-to-date information.
  186. (README.WRI was just discussed in the previous section.)

  188. 5. The driver will probably present you with a dialog box in which
  189. you need to give it information about how you've installed the
  190. device.  (This is the same dialog box that you can access in
  191. "Drivers" by selecting the driver and pressing the Setup button.)
  192. Please consult the manufacturer's manual for the correct device
  193. settings.  If you haven't changed the factory-default settings on the
  194. device, then you probably don't need to change the default values
  195. proposed in the dialog box.

  197. 6. Press OK to finish configuring the driver.  At this point, you
  198. should restart Windows for your changes to take effect.
