CD-ROM Notes
Our CD-ROM edition of Audubon's Mammals is from an 1840 "First Octavo
Edition" of James J. Audubon's "Quadrapeds of North America". CMC ReSearch
has reformatted the material in order to make full use of a personal computer's
capabilities.
One of the advantages of the computer format is the ability to look at
other "pages" from anywhere in the text. By accessing the "link" window,
DiscPassage can call up the Genus for each mammal from anywhere in the article.
You can also find the color Plates, and mammal sounds in the same manner.
Our editors have used the following format conventions in the preparation
of this disc:
* Within the text you will see many names in capital letters. This was the
convention that Audubon himself used in his text to set off proper names.
We have preserved this convention in our text.
* Due to the inability of the ASCII character set to print Greek letters,
the Greek words that Audubon used in his Family and Genus descriptions
have been "Latinized": the letters delta-iota-sigma, for example, have
become [dis]; the square brackets indicate that the editors have made
this change.
* Many changes regarding the classification of species have happened
since the time of John J. Audubon. We have attempted to demonstrate
the changes by adding modern names and identifications. The additions
are denoted by brackets [].
* Audio is denoted by the "*" character.
CMC ReSearch would like to give special thanks to the following:
Brett Sellers, for supplying the modern names, classifications and
any other odd questions we could come up with.
Library of Natural Sound and Robert Bocking Procuctions, for suppling
audio for "Audubon's Mammals".
