- install this Service Pak on OS/2 2.00.1
- (the version that has been preinstalled
- on some IBM computers), or on any
- computer to which OS/2 2.x beta code has
- been added. Any attempt to do this will
- cause a warning message to be displayed.
-
- WARNING:
- This Service Pak contains a new graphics
- engine and some new printer drivers for
- it. In this new graphics environment,
- some of the original OS/2 1.3 printer
- drivers for IBM printers will not work.
- However, updates are available for these
- printer drivers. If you install this
- Service Pak with these old OS/2 1.3
- printer drivers on your system, and then
- attempt to print, your system will stop
- and you will have to restart it. ANY
- UNSAVED DATA WILL BE LOST.
-
- After installing OS/2 2.0, you should
- have replaced each of the following OS/2
- 1.3 printer drivers with the specified
- printer driver that was included on the
- OS/2 2.0 installation diskettes:
-
- 1.3 Driver 2.0 Driver
-
- IBM4201.DRV IBM42XX.DRV
-
- IBM4202.DRV IBM42XX.DRV

-
-
- WARNING:
- After installing this Service Pak, if
- you use the Selective Install object or
- the Configure object (on a preinstalled
- system) to install anything other than a
- display driver or you install any OS/2
- or WIN-OS/2 printer drivers, you MUST
- reinstall this Service Pak. Therefore,
- if you want to make changes, make them
- now BEFORE you install the Service Pak.
- For example, you could use Selective
- Install now to add fonts or the "OS/2
- Command Reference" to your system.
-
- Notes:
- Your swap file might have become very
- large since you installed OS/2 2.0. By
- default, the swap file (SWAPPER.DAT) is
- located in C:\OS2\SYSTEM. When you
- start installation, you might see a
- message that states you do not have
- enough space in your partition to
- install this Service Pak. If you have
- OS/2 2.0 and your swap file in the same
- partition, you might create enough space
- to install the Service Pak if you move
- the SWAPPER.DAT file to a partition
- different from the one that contains
- OS/2 2.0. To relocate the swap file,
- change the SWAPPATH= statement in your
- CONFIG.SYS file. For information about
- SWAPPATH, refer to the OS/2 Command
- Reference.
-
- After installing this Service Pak, OS/2
- will use approximately 3 megabytes
- more disk space than before, depending
- on the features you have installed.
- If you had only a small amount of free
- space on the partition where the swap
- file resides, you may need to move it
- to another partition as outlined above.
-
- Many customers are aware of the ALT+F1
- key sequence to restore a desktop to its
- original state. After installing this
- Service Pak, ALT+F1 will return your
- system to its state as it was
- immediately before the Service Pak was
- installed.
-
- After applying the Service Pak, if you
- install a 16-bit display driver named
- DISPLAY.DLL, you must do the following:
-
- 1. Create a directory and name it as
- follows:
-
- C:\MYDISPLAY
-
- (The C: assumes you have OS/2 2.0
- installed on drive C.)
-
- 2. Edit the LIBPATH= statement in
- CONFIG.SYS so that C:\MYDISPLAY is
- in the statement before C:\OS2\DLL.
- (The C: assumes you have OS/2 2.0
- installed on drive C.)
-
- 3. Copy the new file DISPLAY.DLL to the
- C:\MYDISPLAY directory.
-
- 4. Restart your system.
-
- After applying this Service Pak, the
- Templates folder might contain two
- copies each of the "PIF file.PIF" and
- the "Metafile.MET" templates. All four
- of these templates work normally.
-
- This Service Pak provides an updated
- README in the Information folder. If
- you have a printed book entitled "Tips
- and Techniques," the information in that
- book is no longer current. Use the
- updated README. The README also
- includes information about ordering IBM
- OS/2 2.0 technical publications.
-
- After you apply this Service Pak, OS/2
- 2.0 will provide support for a Super
- Video Graphics Array (SVGA) display
- adapter. To install the display adapter
- on a computer that has OS/2 2.0
- preinstalled, select the Welcome folder,
- select the Configuration Tools folder,
- and then select the Configure object.
- To install the SVGA display adapter on
- other computers, select the OS/2 System
- folder, select the System Setup folder,
- select the System folder, and then
- select the Selective Install object.
-
- When you install any display adapter or
- change the resolution of your display,
- you will be prompted to insert "Display
- Driver Diskette 1" or "Display Driver
- Diskette 2." These diskettes are
- included in this Service Pak.
-
- If you have a system equipped with an
- XGA adapter and display running in XGA
- mode, you will need to load all WIN-OS/2
- font files. You can do this using the
- Selective Install object or the
- Configure object (on a preinstalled
- system) after installing this Service
- Pak. To accomplish this, select XGA as
- the Primary Display (even if it is
- already selected) and follow the prompts
- on the screen. You do NOT need to
- reinstall this Service Pak after this
- procedure.
-
- After you apply this Service Pak,
- Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) will be
- started automatically whenever you open
- a public session. Therefore, there is
- no longer any use for the Data Update
- object in the Productivity folder. If
- you want to, you can shred the Data
- Update object.
-
- This Service Pak also includes an
- updated version of the response file
- install program (RSPINST.EXE). If you
- have a backup copy of this file on
- diskette, be sure to replace it after
- you install the Service Pak. The file
- RSPINST.EXE is located in the
- \OS2\INSTALL directory on the drive to
- which you applied the Service Pak. The
- SEDISK.EXE program has also been updated
- and is included in this Service Pak. If
- you re-create diskettes using the
- updated version, it will automatically
- include the updated version of
- RSPINST.EXE. To find out how to use
- either of these programs, refer to "OS/2
- 2.0 Remote Installation and
- Maintenance," document number GG24-3780
- or part number 52G9943. For information
- about how to order this publication,
- refer to the README object in the
- Information folder (on the desktop).
-
- In addition to installation
- instructions, this README contains the
- procedure for upgrading the remote
- initial program load (IPL) service for a
- local area network (LAN) to use the new
- display drivers included in this service
- pak, and also information about
- installing from a LAN. Refer to
- "Upgrading the Remote IPL Service for a
- LAN" and to "Installing on a Client
- Workstation from a LAN."
-
- Also included in this README is
- information for program developers who
- use the kernel debugger. Refer to
- "Getting an Upgraded Kernel Debugger."
-
-
- PROCEDURES FOR INSTALLING THIS Service Pak
- __________________________________________
-
- Following are several ways to install this
- Service Pak:
-
- o Procedure 1: Installing All Changes to All
- Partitions.
-
- Use this procedure if you want to apply the
- service updates to ALL partitions that
- contain an installed OS/2 2.0.
-
- If you have a system with an AOX adapter
- card, you should use this procedure.
-
- o Procedure 2: Installing All Changes to
- Selected Partitions.
-
- Use this procedure if you do NOT want to
- apply the service updates to all partitions
- that contain OS/2 2.0.
-
- o Procedure 3: Installing Only Some of the
- Changes.
-
- Use this procedure if you want to apply
- only some of the service updates to any
- partition that contains OS/2 2.0.
-
- WARNING:
- You CANNOT stop the update process after
- it starts.
-
- Notes:
- If IBM LAN Server/Advanced is installed
- on your computer, you might have one or
- more files on the hard disk that have an
- access control list (ACL). If you start
- the installation of this Service Pak and
- there is a file with an ACL in any
- directory that will be updated by this
- Service Pak, you will be prompted to
- restart the system and remove the ACL.
- Online information is provided to assist
- you.
-
- To use the new display device drivers
- included in this Service Pak for remote
- IPL service, use installation Procedure
- 3. At the appropriate prompt, select
- the Remote IPL directory. Then refer to
- "Upgrading the Remote IPL Service for a
- LAN" (later in this README).
-
- If the installation procedure stops
- before the service update is complete,
- turn the computer off, remove the
- diskette from drive A, insert Corrective
- Service Diskette 1 into drive A, and
- turn the computer back on. All previous
- changes have been saved.
-
- Two log files are provided to verify
- installation. Their file names are:
-
- SERVICE.LOG
- DSPINSTL.LOG
-
- The drive location for the files is the
- drive on which OS/2 2.0 was installed.
- The path is :\OS2\INSTALL.
-
- Any subsequent service updates will be
- appended to these log files.
-
-
- PROCEDURE 1: INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO ALL PARTITIONS
-
- 1. Shutdown your system.
-
- 2. When the shutdown is complete, insert
- Service Pak diskette 1.
-
- 3. Now press and hold the Ctrl and Alt keys
- and press the Delete key.
-
-
- PROCEDURE 2: INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO SELECTED PARTITIONS
-
- 1. Select an OS/2 command-prompt object from
- the Command Prompts folder in the OS/2
- System folder.
-
- 2. Insert Corrective Service Diskette 1 into
- drive A.

- prompt:
-
- A:\SERVICE
-
- and then press Enter.
-
- 4. Select OK to display a list of the OS/2 2.0
- products installed on your system. (For
- example, if OS/2 2.0 is in more than one
- partition, the OS/2 2.0 base product will
- be listed and selected more than once.)
-
- 5. Deselect one or more products that you do
- not want to update.
-
- 6. Select Service and then select Continue to
- update all directories in each selected
- product.
-
- If you do not want to update all
- directories in each selected product,
- select Cancel.
-
- 7. Continue to follow the prompts on the
- screen.
-
-
- PROCEDURE 3: INSTALLING ONLY SOME OF THE CHANGES
-
- WARNING:
- If you do not apply the service updates
- to all directories, your system might
- not run after you install the service
- pak. This could happen because an
- update in one directory might be
- dependent on an update in another
- directory. If you then update one of
- those directories, but not the other
- (for example if you do not update the
- :\OS2 directory), OS/2 2.0 might not be
- able to start after installation. If
- this happens, you will have to reinstall
- your original version of OS/2 2.0 and
- this Service Pak.
-
- 1. Select an OS/2 command-prompt object from
- the Command Prompts folder in the OS/2
- System folder.
-
- 2. Insert Corrective Service Diskette 1 into
- drive A.
-
- 3. Type the following at the OS/2 command
- prompt:
-
- A:\SERVICE
-
- and then press Enter.
-
- 4. Select OK to display a list of the OS/2 2.0
- products installed on your system. (For
- example, if OS/2 2.0 is in more than one
- partition, the OS/2 2.0 base product will
- be listed and selected more than once.)
-
- 5. If you do not want the service updates
- applied to a particular product, deselect
- the product.
-
- 6. To specify the directories you want to
- update, do the following:
-
- a. Select "Select directories".
-
- b. Deselect one or more directories you do
- not want to update.
-
- If you have backup directories on a
- drive that is not listed and you want
- the updates applied to those
- directories, select "Select drives",
- select the directories, and then select
- OK.
-
- c. Select OK.
-
- d. Select Service and then select Continue
- to update all changes to selected
- directories of selected products.
-
- 7. Continue to follow the prompts on the
- screen.
-
-
- UPGRADING THE REMOTE IPL SERVICE FOR A LAN
- __________________________________________
-
- You can upgrade the remote IPL service for a
- LAN so you can remotely install the new 32-bit
- display drivers.
-
- Note: Before following this procedure, install
- this Service Pak using installation
- procedure 3. At the appropriate prompt,
- select the Remote IPL directory. This
- will install the support for 32-bit
- display drivers, but will NOT install
- the 32-bit display drivers into the
- Remote IPL directory. After
- installation of this Service Pak,
- proceed with these instructions.
-
- To install the 32-bit display drivers in the
- Remote IPL directory, using the REXX procedure
- RPLSPDDI.CMD, do the following:
-
- 1. Copy the files RPLSPDDI.CMD and RPLSETD.CMD
- from Corrective Service Diskette 2 to the
- \IBMLAN\RPL subdirectory. For example, if
- the LAN server is on drive C, type:
-
- COPY A:RPLS*.CMD C:\IBMLAN\RPL
-
- 2. Run the REXX procedure RPLSPDDI.CMD to
- install the display driver files in the
- Remote IPL directory.
-
- The syntax is:
-
- RPLSPDDI [/H] [/D:drive] [/O:OS2_rpl_root]
-
- where:
-
- /H
- will display the syntax help panel.
-
- /D:drive
- is the diskette drive to use. The
- default is A.
-
- /O:OS2_rpl_root
- is the Remote IPL root directory for the
- OS/2 2.0 code. If you do not specify a
- path, the default is the path saved in
- OS2SYS.INI by running the RIPLINST
- utility program.
-
- Examples:
-
- o To install using all the defaults,
- type:
-
- RPLSPDDI
-
- o To install using the B diskette drive,
- type:
-
- RPLSPDDI /D:B
-
- o To install to a root directory
- different from the one set by running
- the RIPLINST utility program, type:
-
- RPLSPDDI.CMD /O:C:\IBMLAN\RPL\OS2.20a
-
- Note: This must be the same Remote IPL
- directory you upgraded when you
- installed this Service Pak.
-
- o Run the REXX procedure RPLSETD.CMD to
- update remote IPL workstation
- definitions to use the new display
- drivers.
-
- The syntax is:
-
- RPLSETD /D:driver /C:client
- [/O:current_OS2] [/N:new_OS2]
- [/L:logfile]
-
- where:
-
- /D:driver (required)
- is the new display type for the
- client definition. The following
- display types are valid for the
- default configuration:
-
-
- IBMVGA32 32-bit VGA
- display
- driver
-
- IBMXGA32 32-bit XGA
- display
- driver
-
- IBM8514 16-bit 8514
- display
- driver
-
-
- /C:client (required)
- is the name of the OS/2 remote IPL
- client workstation or it is the
- drive, path, and file name of a file
- containing a list of client
- workstations.
-
- /O:current_OS2 (optional)
- is the root directory for the
- current version of OS/2 2.0 that the
- client is starting. This parameter
- is case sensitive. The default is
- OS2.20.
-
- /N:new_OS2 (optional)
- is the root directory for the
- version of OS/2 2.0 that the client
- is to be switched to. This
- parameter is case sensitive. The
- default is OS2.20a.
-
- /L:logfile (optional)
- is the name of a file to which all
- messages and errors are to be
- logged. If this parameter is
- specified, no messages or errors
- will be displayed on the screen.
-
- Note: If OS/2 2.0 is installed in a
- directory other than
- D:\IBMLAN\RPL\OS2.20, then
- either the 'current_OS2', or
- the 'new_os2' parameter, or
- both, must be specified to
- correctly update the
- client.FIT table.
-
- Examples:
-
- - To update the DEFALT20 client for
- IBMVGA32, type:
-
- RPLSETD /D:IBMVGA32 /C:DEFALT20
-
- This will update the default files
- to support the new VGA display
- driver. These files are used when
- defining clients using the default
- configuration.
-
- - To update the MACH001 client for
- IBMXGA32, type:
-
- RPLSETD /D:IBMXGA32 /C:MACH001
-
- - To update multiple client
- workstations, do the following:
-
- a. Create an ASCII file that lists
- the names of all the client
- workstations to be updated.
- List each client name on a
- separate line, starting in
- column 1.
-
- b. Type the following command:
-
- RPLSETD /D:IBMVGA32 /C:d:\path\client.lst
-
- This will update each client
- workstation in the file
- client.lst to support the
- IBMVGA32 display driver.
-
-
- INSTALLING ON A CLIENT WORKSTATION FROM A LAN
- _____________________________________________
-
- OS/2 2.0 allows you to install a Service Pak
- with redirection to a client workstation using
- the LAN Configuration Installation Distribution
- Utility (LAN CID Utility) program. The LAN CID
- Utility program is shipped with the Network
- Transport Services/2 (NTS/2) program on the
- NTS/2 Utilities diskette. The LAN CID Utility
- program runs the FSERVICE.EXE installation
- program that is contained in this Service Pak.
- FSERVICE.EXE is located in the root directory
- on Corrective Service Diskette 2.
-
- If you want to install a Service Pak on a
- client workstation without using diskettes, or
- if you want to install both OS/2 2.0 and a
- Service Pak with only one LAN CID Utility REXX
- command file, you will have to follow
- additional procedures. These procedures are
- located in the README.UTL file in the root
- directory on the NTS/2 Utilities diskette.
-
- Following is the syntax for FSERVICE and
- descriptions of the parameters you can use to
- install a Service Pak on client workstations.
-
- The FSERVICE syntax is:
-
- FSERVICE /R:<path><response file> /S:<source path>
- /T:<boot directory> /L1:<path><log file name>
-
- where:
-
- /R: (required)
- is the response file.
-
- This specifies the drive, path, and file
- name of the response file.
-
- /S: (optional)
- is the source directory.
-
- This parameter specifies the base directory
- of the Service Pak images. This parameter
- overrides the :SOURCEPATH tag in the
- response file, if the tag exists.
-
- /T:
- is the directory from which the Service Pak
- will be installed.
-
- This parameter is optional if the service
- pak installation is started from a diskette.
- If the installation is started from a
- diskette with this parameter specified, the
- value is not verified.
-
- This parameter is required if the service
- pak installation is started from the hard
- disk under the OS/2 maintenance system
- created by SEMAINT. In this case, the value
- specified in the /T: parameter for FSERVICE
- should be the same as for SEMAINT (for
- example, C:\SERVICE).
-
- /L1: (optional)
- is the log file name.
-
- This parameter specifies the drive, path and
- file name of the log file. This parameter
- overrides the :LOGFILE tag in the response
- file, if the tag exists. If no log file is
- specified, \OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG is used.
-
-

- GETTING ISO-COMPLIANT CHARACTER FONTS
- _____________________________________
-
- The IBM 9514, 9517, and 9518 displays installed
- with XGA-2 Display Adapter/A support
- ISO-compliant fonts. Some countries require
- that the size and contrast of characters on a
- display screen meet Standard 9241 Part 3 of the
- International Organization for Standardization
- (ISO) and the German DIN 66234 Standard. An
- ISO-compliant system provides flicker free
- performance, stable images, sharp characters,
- increased brightness, high contrast, and
- reduced glare.
