  49. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  50. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11.
  51.  
  52. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  53. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.

  55. If you are using Microsoft Windows NT(R) 3.51, please install the mini (browser only) or browser/mail version.

  61. Internet Explorer enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  62. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet. Other services, 
  63. such as Gopher, FTP, and NNTP news support, are also available.

  96. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

  99. Installing from the Internet
  100. ----------------------------
  101.  
  102. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  103. the following procedure.
  104.  
  105. Important
  106. For the 40-bit version of Internet Explorer, the name of the download 
  107. file is Dlful30c.exe. For the 128-bit version, you determine the file name
  108. at the time you download it.
  109.  
  110. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  111. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  112.    and save the download file to the temporary directory.
  113. 3. In File Manager, run the download file to extract the program files.
  114. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  115.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  116. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  117.    directory you specify.
  118.    
  119.    Note
  120.    If you are upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer and
  121.    choose to install the program in a different directory from your
  122.    original version, please refer to the following section, "Upgrading 
  123.    over Version 2.01 and 2.1," for further instructions.

  125. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  126. 7. Run Internet Explorer.

  129. Upgrading over Version 2.01 and 2.1
  130. When upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer, you can choose to
  131. install the program into the same directory as your previous version 
  132. or establish another directory. If you choose the former, your previous 
  133. dialer settings and connection(s) will be preserved. However, if you choose
  134. the latter, you must do the following in order to use your pre-existing 
  135. dialer settings and connection(s):
  136.  
  137.   1. If you install to a new directory, but keep your existing 
  138.      program group, you must change the properties of any dialer 
  139.      program item(s) you previously created so that the Command Line 
  140.      and Working Directory settings point to the appropriate directories. 
  141.      (Note that the New Connections program item does not need to be 
  142.      modified.) You do this by clicking the dialer program item, choosing 
  143.      Properties from the File menu, and replacing all references to the 
  144.      existing directory with the name of new directory. For example, if 
  145.      you install an upgrade of Internet Explorer to a new directory named
  146.      NEWEXPL, the following change would be required:
  147.  
  148.     Command Line: C:\IEXPLORE\iedial.exe C:\IEXPLORE\CON0000.CON
  149.     Working Directory: C:\IEXPLORE
  150.  
  151.     Changes to:
  152.  
  153.     Command Line: C:\NEWEXPL\iedial.exe C:\NEWEXPL\CON0000.CON
  154.     Working Directory: C:\NEWEXPL
  155.  
  156.   2. Using File Manager, copy all files with the extension .con
  157.      from the previous directory to the new created directory.
  158.  
  159.   3. If during the upgrade you choose to use a new program group, just 
  160.      follow step 2 and copy the old dialer program items to the new 
  161.      program group. Repeat step 1 to change the Command Line and Working
  162.      Directory settings.
  163.  
  164.  
  165. Upgrading over Version 1.5 and Version 1.6 Beta
  166. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  167. read the following special notes.
  168.  
  169. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  170.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  171. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  172.   servers, in the new version.
  173. - Your Favorites and History lists will be preserved.
  174. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  175.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  176.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  177.   removing Win32s from your system:

  181. LAN Installations
  182. -----------------
  183.  
  184. If you already have access to the Internet through your LAN, you will be 
  185. able to use Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. (If you are not 
  186. sure whether you currently have access, consult your network administrator.)
  187.  
  188. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  189. the address of proxy servers that can be used.
  190.  
  191. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  192.  
  193. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  194. - Run the installation in Custom mode, and make sure that the 
  195.   check box labaled TCP/IP Stack And Dialer is not selected.
  196.  
  197. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant. 
  198.  
  199. To enable use of a proxy server:
  200.  
  201. 1. On the View menu, click Options.
  202. 2. On the Connection tab, select the check box under Proxy
  203.    Server, and then click Settings. 
  204. 3. In the Proxy Settings dialog box, type the address of your 
  205.    proxy server and change any other necessary settings.

  209. Running on a Remote Installation
  210. --------------------------------
  211.  
  212. If you will be running Internet Explorer on a diskless workstation:
  213.  
  214. 1. Install Internet Explorer on the server.
  215. 2. Copy Iexplore.ini to the client Windows directory.
  216.  
  217.  
  218. If you will be sharing a remote installation from a client computer
  219. running Windows 3.1:
  220.  
  221. 1. The following files must be in the client computer's 
  222.    Windows\System directory:
  223.  
  224.      Comctlie.dll
  225.      Vscrpt16.dll
  226.      Jscrpt16.dll
  227.      Secur16.dll
  228.      Security.dll
  229.      Msapsp16.dll
  230.      Msnath16.dll

  243. 2. The client computer must have OLE 2.03 or higher installed.
  244.    Copying the OLE files will not properly update the syustem.
  245. 3. The file Iexplore.ini should be on the client computer.
  246.  
  247.  
  248. Before Using the Mail Client   
  249. ----------------------------
  250.  
  251. This software includes the first release of Internet Mail for Windows 3.1
  252. and Windows NT 3.51. Internet Mail enables you to send and receive electronic
  253. mail using the Internet. In order to use Internet Mail, you need to have an
  254. e-mail account.
  255.  
  256. If you did not use the Internet Connection Wizard to setup Internet Mail,
  257. you need to configure Internet Mail before using it. If it has not been
  258. configured, Internet Mail will ask you to enter the following information:
  259.   - The names of the network servers that you use to send and
  260.     receive your mail (the name of your POP3 and SMTP servers)
  261.   - Your login name and password on the server from which you retrieve
  262.     e-mail
  263.   - Your e-mail address
  264. If you are not ready to enter this information, contact your system
  265. administrator or your Internet service provider for assistance.
  266.  
  267.                      
  268. Installing a Modem 
  269. ------------------
  270.  
  271. Before setting up, please make sure that your modem is turned on and properly
  272. connected. Setup will try to detect and configure your modem. If a modem is
  273. detected, but the exact type is unknown, select the modem manually from the
  274. list of supported modems.
  275.  
  276. If a modem is not detected or you select the check box labeled Don't 
  277. Detect My Modem, you can select the modem manually.  However, the default
  278. maximum speed will be 9600 baud. Therefore, you should manually select a 
  279. speed that matches your modem's capabilities in order to optimize the 
  280. performance of the modem.

  283. Changing Initialization Settings for Modems
  284. -----------------------------------------------------
  285. If you are using an older phone system or hardware, or if you are installing
  286. a "generic" modem, the existing initialization settings for the modem might 
  287. not be sufficient. If you have problems with the modem, you may need to 
  288. modify the Modems2.ini file in order to change the initialization settings.  
  289. Use Notepad or another text editor to open the file, and then, in the modems 
  290. section, locate the line for the modem, and modify the INIT line as needed.

  293. Using the Dialer
  294. ----------------
  295.  
  296. This release of Internet Explorer also supports dialer scripts. 
  297.  
  298.   Note
  299.   RAS is the only supported dial-up connection for Windows NT 3.51.
  300.  
  301. IEscript.exe is located in the directory where you installed Internet 
  302. Explorer. The program enables you to associate a script with a connection. 
  303. To start the program, choose Run from the File menu in Program Manager.
  304.  
  305. In order to use the dialer with a PBX that does not have a dial tone, you 
  306. need to modify the DialString in the "Dial-In Configuration" section of the
  307. Shivappp.ini file in order to dial. For example, the X3 command would be 
  308. inserted between the "AT" and "D" entries as follows:
  309.  
  310.   [Dial-In Configuration]
  311.   DialString=ATX3D
  312.  
  313. Note that adding the X3 command affects all locations and only functions
  314. properly with Hayes-compatible modems.
  315.  
  316. To access an outside line, you might need to add a pause character (either a 
  317. W or a comma) after the outside access number, so that there is a pause 
  318. before the outside number is dialed. To specify this setting, click the My 
  319. Locations tab, and then in the box labeled To Access An Outside Line, First 
  320. Dial, type the outside line access number followed by a W or a comma. For 
  321. example, if the number required to access an outside line is "9," you would 
  322. type the following in the box:

  331. Using Third-Party Telnet Helper Applications
  332. ----------------------------------------------
  333.  
  334. To configure Internet Explorer to use a Telnet helper application, open
  335. Iexplore.ini and locate the [Helpers] section. Remove the semicolon (;) from
  336. in front of the telnet= line, and type the path to the telnet application.
  337. For example:

  340.   telnet=c:\windows\telnet.exe %s
  341.

  343. Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts    
  344. --------------------------------------------------------------
  345.  
  346. Internet Explorer has been installed and tested with several of the most
  347. popular Internet access products available today. If it is configured
  348. properly, you should be able to use the TCP/IP protocol and dialer (via
  349. Winsock.dll) provided with these products to connect with your Internet
  350. service provider (ISP). It is not necessary to install the Dialer and TCP/IP
  351. stack that are provided with Internet Explorer.
  352.  
  353. In general, all that is required is that you configure the PATH command 
  354. in your Autoexec.bat file so that Internet Explorer can find the Winsock.dll 
  355. file you are using to connect to the Internet. For example, if your
  356. Winsock.dll file is in the directory C:\Connect, add a line directly under
  357. your current PATH command that reads: 
  358.   PATH=%PATH%;C:\CONNECT
  359.  
  360. If you have multiple Winsock.dll files, please make sure that the Winsock
  361. file you choose to use comes first in the PATH command or is located in the
  362. directory where your browser files reside.
  363.  
  364. Following are procedures for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer over some
  365. common Internet access products. Other packages available include FTP
  366. Software, Network TeleSystems, and shareware from Trumpet Software
  367. (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).

  370.    Internet Chameleon 4.5
  371.    ----------------------
  372.  
  373. 1. Install Internet Explorer to the suggested default directory
  374.    (C:\Iexplore).
  375. 2. Make sure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. 
  376.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  377.    file, and then restart your computer.
  378. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer program (from the Custom icon).
  379. 4. Select the line corresponding to your current Internet service 
  380.    provider, and make sure that the Dial On Demand command on the 
  381.    Setup menu has a check mark by it. This makes the dialer 
  382.    program run when Internet Explorer tries to connect to the Internet.
  383. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  384.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  385.  
  386. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an Internet
  387. connection is made when you first enter an Internet address in Internet
  388. Explorer.
  389.  
  390. If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, you need to
  391. start that program before you start Internet Explorer.

  393.  
  394.    Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
  395.    ---------------------------------------
  396.  
  397. 1. Install Internet Explorer to the directory that contains your 
  398.    Netscape Navigator files. For example, if you installed the 
  399.    Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\Netscape), place 
  400.    the Internet Explorer files in the same location.
  401. 2. Run Internet Explorer.
  402.  
  403.  
  404.    Other Internet Dialer Packages
  405.    ------------------------------
  406.  
  407. 1. Using the Custom setup option, install Internet Explorer to the 
  408.    suggested default directory without the TCP/IP stack and dialer.
  409. 2. Make sure that the Internet dialer directory is in your path. 
  410.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  411.    file, and then restart your computer.
  412. 3. Run your existing Internet dialer program.
  413. 4. Choose to enable dial on demand (if your dialer supports this option). 
  414.    This makes the dialer program run when Internet Explorer tries to
  415.    connect to the Internet.
  416. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  417.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  418.  
  419. If you have configured the dialer to dial on demand, an Internet connection
  420. is made when you first enter an Internet address in Internet Explorer.
  421.  
  422. If you have not configured the dialer to dial on demand, you need to start 
  423. that program before you start Internet Explorer.

  426. Making a Backup Copy of the Software    
  427. ------------------------------------
  428.  
  429. 1. Make sure that you have three floppy disks (3.5" disks with 1.44 
  430.    MB capacity).
  431. 2. After you have downloaded the software and have run the download file 
  432.    (see "Installing from the Internet" earlier in this file) your temporary
  433.    directory contains all the files that you need to make disks.
  434. 3. Copy the file Iew31_3.cab on your disk number 3.
  435. 4. Copy the file Iew31_2.cab on your disk number 2.
  436. 5. Copy the following files on your disk number 1.
  437.     Files.inf
  438.     Readme.txt
  439.     Iew31_1.cab
  440.     Setup.exe

  448. KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS
  449. ---------------------
  450.  
  451. * No inline video.
  452. * No Internet shortcuts.
  453. * You cannot open another instance of Internet Explorer by double-clicking
  454.   an .htm file in File Manager or double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon
  455.   in Program Manager. To open a new instance of Internet Explorer, choose
  456.   New Window from the File menu.
  457. * If you have voice messages waiting on your phone line (rapid beeps), our 
  458.   Dialer fails to dial out on the line. This can be remedied (for Hayes-
  459.   compatible modems only) if, in the file Modems2.ini, at the end of the line
  460.   for the InitString setting, you set "blind dialing" by typing:
  461.     S6=5
  462. * Internet Explorer might have difficulty loading a very large number of
  463.   newsgroups (>16000). If your news server has a large number of newsgroups,
  464.   you should use a dedicated newsreader to browse the groups.
  465. * After upgrading to version 3.0, if you run an earlier version, you might
  466.   get a dialog box stating "Could not :Load Entry Point in Security Protocol
  467.   Module: Proxy_Basic=Proxy_basic_Load,basic.dll." Just click OK and continue
  468.   or copy the Basic.dll from the 3.0 installation over the Basic.dll in the
  469.   previous installation.
  470. * You might experience problems running some plug-ins.  We are working with
  471.   several vendors on these issues.
  472. * Pressing the TAB key does not select the Address bar as in previous 
  473.   versions.
  474. * If you are running Windows NT 3.51, the background of the Font Preview 
  475.   box (on the Font tab in the Internet Mail Options dialog box) will 
  476.   sometimes change colors. In some cases, this color may be very dark, 
  477.   making it impossible to see the font being previewed. It is, however, 
  478.   still possible to change the font. Restarting your computer a few times 
  479.   may solve the color problem.
