So Here's What's New...

Homepage of :IRT Environment, Inc.
IRT Environment, Inc. founded in 1986, is an energy and
environmental information firm specializing in publications,
presentations, consulting, and video productions. It has
published The Energy Newsbrief, a timely review of energy and
environmental issues facing the world today, annually since
1986.
In 1992, IRT Environment launched The Results Center to support
the development of successful energy efficiency programs by
researching the best programs worldwide to enable utilities,
energy ministries and others to quickly incorporate the
experiences of leading programs into their design,
implementation, and evaluation activities. The Results Center has
documented a library of more than 100 program Profiles, and they
can be found at:

:CFLs for LDCs
In the face of sharply escalating electric demands, developing
countries face severe shortages of capital to invest in the
necessary increases in generating capacity. Meanwhile, a
substantial and cheaper untapped resource to meet the increasing
demand already exists in terms of the large improvements possible
in efficiencies of existing and future end uses of electricity in
these countries. _Advanced Lighting And Window Technologies For
Reducing Electricity Consumption And Peak Demand:_ a paper by
Gadgil, et. al. illustrates with analyses two of the promising
efficient end-use technologies for developing countries: compact
fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to replace incandescent lamps, and
advanced windows for air conditioned buildings.

:IIEC Sustainable Energy Guide
The International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) has
generously donated the Sustainable Energy Guide for Solstice
users. Information on funding sources, professional exchange,
technical assistance, and training are all conveniently located
in an on-line database searchable by key word.

Visit the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (:ACEEE)
CREST's first foray into the on-line shopping craze, ACEEE's home
page contains an order form where books, proceedings, and papers
can be ordered right from Solstice. They can be found at:
http://solstice.crest.org/efficiency/aceee/index.html.
:Answers To Your Energy Efficiency Questions
For the past several years, SEREF Executive Vice President Ken
Sheinkopf has written a column on residential energy efficiency.
Thanks to the blossoming information ecology of Solstice and the
World Wide Web, we are able to share his thoughtful and pithy
insights with you.

Green Seal Certified :Products On-Line
Green Seal is the independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to
protecting the environment by promoting the manufacture and sale
of environmentally preferable consumer products. It sets
environmental standards and allows the use of its certification
mark on products found to meet them. Green Seal also educates
consumers on how to use their buying decisions to help the
environment. Solstice has a list of their environmentally-
certified products at:
http://solstice.crest.org/environment/GreenSeal/index.html
Solar :House Under Construction
Professor William Lord of Boston University is building a home in
Mane integrating solar design and architecture. Join him in his
plans and watch as his home becomes a reality at:
http://solstice.crest.org/renewables/wlord/index.html
New :Calendar Lets Users Post Events
Do you have an energy-related event you would like to publicize on
the Internet? Add it to the Solstice calendar at:
http://solstice.crest.org/common/events.html.
Users can post their own events on the calendar for Solstice
travelers to see.
Back to :School?
College students looking for opportunities for further study in
renewable energy can find their way to the right school on the
Internet. Thanks to the Energy Foundation and Home Energy
Magazine, the "Energy Related Graduate Programs in US
Universities" is now available on Solstice.
Published by The Energy Foundation in 1992, the guide contains
hundreds of listings for graduate-level programs at colleges and
universities across the U.S. The guide can be found at:
http://solstice.crest.org/social/grad/index.html
CREST :Internet Services
Is your energy or environment-related organization interested in
being on Solstice? CREST is offering its Internet services to
for-profit and non-profit organizations. These services include
designing and maintaining home pages, setting up electronic
discussion groups, and converting databases to Internet-ready
documents. As Solstice becomes more and more popular, CREST
hopes organizations will take advantage of these services to
promote their products and services to the tens of thousands of
people per month who use Solstice and are interested in
sustainable development.
Setting up a home page on Solstice involves converting textual
materials to HTML (the formatting language of the World Wide Web)
digitizing images, video or sound clips, creating interactive
"fill-out forms" so visitors can provide feedback, creating
corresponding gopher, ftp and e-mail files, establishing online
commerce schemes, and more. For more details, see our net
services page at:
http://solstice.crest.org/crestinfo/net_services.html
or send email to <majordomo@crest.org> with this message:

:Apple Donates Computers to CREST
Apple Computer has donated four state-of-the-art Power Macintosh
platforms to CREST, including a color scanner. The equipment was
given in support of CREST's educational activities on both CD-ROM
and the Internet.
Four Power Macs, one 8100 and three 7100s will be added to
CREST's electronic resource pool. The extra platforms will allow
CREST to employ more people to assist Andrew Waegel, CREST's
Internet Services Manager, in posting information on CREST's
Internet server.
"This generous gift will enable us to increase our work
incrementally," said Michael Totten, CREST Director. "This
summer research associates will help with the HTML markup for
Solstice, and now we have the computer resources to do so."
Special thanks goes to Fred Silverman of Apple Computer for
arranging the donation. In addition to this recent gift, Apple
also donated CREST's initial start-up platform back in 1992. The
computer company is typically very supportive of environmental
groups, particularly those that use computer technology to
promote environmental issues.
Messinger :Trust Awards CREST $15k
The Alida R. Messinger Trust has announced it will award CREST
$15,000 in unsolicited funds for operational support.
CREST Director Michael Totten traveled to the Environmental
Grantmaker's Association Fall Retreat October 12-16 to talk about
the role of advanced computer and communications tools in the
environmental community. Officials from the trust were impressed
with Totten's presentation and decided to award the grant in
support of CREST's activities.
"This is a wonderful surprise," said Totten. "Operational
support is what we need the most right now. Being such a
technology-intensive operation can really strain the budget of a
non-profit organization."
A member of the Rockefeller family, the Alida R. Messinger Trust
is an independent personal philanthropy office.
