REMARKABLE DIRECTORY
Program and Text by David Zammat
This C-128 program provides disk directory listings with remarks for
each filename in the directory. It helps you avoid hunting around for paper
notes explaining what is on the disks and stores all the commented
directories on one master disk called "dirmaster". The program will work on
any drive, numbered 8 through 30, and supports CMD native mode
directories.
To run Remarkable Directory (RD), first format a disk with the name
"dirmaster" and copy the files REMARKABLE, CONTROL80, RDFONT, and EDSCREEN
to it. Then insert the disk in an active drive and run REMARKABLE using
your 80 column monitor. Because of the nature of this utility, it does not
return to LOADSTAR. A function key menu appears showing several options.
CREATING A REMARKABLE DIRECTORY FILE
------------------------------------
The first option to use is the creation of a RD file for a disk, or the
updating of a previously created RD file for the disk. The disk can be
"dirmaster" as well as any other disk. Insert the disk in the drive and
press F2. Follow the instructions on the screen. The disk directory is read
and displayed in four columns; a maximum of 87 filenames, plus a "Blocks
free" line, are shown. The program can read up to 200 filenames but only
the first 87 are displayed.
You are then asked to place the "dirmaster" disk in the drive. If no
previous RD file exists for the disk to be commented, a new RD file for the
disk is created and stored on the "dirmaster" disk. If a RD file already
exists, it is updated to correspond with the current directory of the disk
being analyzed.
The RD file for a disk named "diskname" will have the name
"rd-diskname", truncated to 16 characters if needed.
If the RD file is newly created, it will include a field for the disk
name, a field for each filename on the disk followed by a remarks field
containing the text "New Directory", and a field for "Blocks free".
If the RD file is an update of a previously created file, it will have
a field for the disk name, a field for each current filename followed by a
field for remarks, and a field for "Blocks free". If a new file was saved
on the disk, it will be added to the RD file with the remark "New file". If
a file was deleted, it will be removed from the RD file. If a filename is
the same as in the previous RD file, it will have the same remarks, except
that if the previous remark was "New Directory" or "New file" the new
remark will be "Archived file".
When the RD file is constructed, an edit screen is shown and then the
RD file is saved on the "dirmaster" disk. The screen shows scrolling
windows listing the filenames in the RD file and the remarks text for each
filename. The windows are scrolled by the UP or DOWN cursor keys on the top
row or bottom row of the keyboard. You can now edit the remarks for each
filename. Select a filename by scrolling until the arrow points to the
filename in the window at the top of the screen. The filename and its
remarks will appear in the center window of the three windows at the bottom
of the screen. Press E and the remark will appear within quote marks and a
question mark will appear at the beginning of the line.
This question mark is from a BASIC Input statement. Type your remark
following the first quote mark and (optionally) end it with a quote mark.
Do not enter any other quote marks. You can include print control
characters such as reversed/normal, text color, and character set, just as
if the text between the quote marks were to be printed on the screen by a
BASIC Print statement. (Do not use cursor up, cursor down, home, or clear
characters.) To enter a control character, enter insert mode by inserting a
space (type shift-INST) where the control character is to go, then type the
control character. The text can be up to 156 characters (nearly two screen
lines) in length. When you are at the end of the first screen line of text,
do not go to the second line by pressing the CRSR RIGHT key; press a
different character key or the SPACE BAR. When you have finished entering
your remarks, input the text by pressing RETURN. The quote marks will
disappear and the text will be displayed according to the print control
characters. This is how the remarks will appear when the RD file is
listed.
Now edit the remarks for any other filenames you choose. Be sure to
press RETURN when done with each filename. Press U and the RD file with the
edited remarks will be saved on the disk, which should be the "dirmaster"
disk. If you wish, you can save the RD file on another disk by inserting
the disk in the drive and pressing U again.
When one or more RD files are saved on the "dirmaster" disk, a RD file
for the "dirmaster" disk itself can be made by placing it in the drive and
pressing F2. This RD file will be named "rd-dirmaster" and will contain
names of RD files for disks whose RD files were saved on "dirmaster". I
hope that's clear. For each RD filename you can edit a remark that explains
what is on the source disk.
Press Q to return from the edit screen to the menu screen.
LISTING A REMARKABLE DIRECTORY FILE
-----------------------------------
To display a RD file, place a disk containing one or more RD files in
the drive and press F3. A disk directory will be shown that is unusual in
that the filetypes do not appear. This is convenient if a file is going to
be loaded or run (in which case F3 will not be properly functional if its
definition is changed). Also, a colon is inserted at the beginning of each
directory line. This will prevent accidental corruption of the program in
case the RETURN key is pressed while the cursor is on a directory line. A
"syntax error" will be generated instead. To continue, just press F3 again.
The listing and/or scrolling can be stopped at any time by pressing
RUN/STOP.
Now select a RD file (its filename begins with "rd-") by placing the
cursor on its directory line, and press F1. The RD file will be listed,
showing the disk name, each filename in the RD file, the remarks for the
filename, and the blocks free line. The listing pauses at each line to
allow reading the text. The pause can be controlled by the NO-SCROLL key
(or CTRL if the computer has JiffyDOS). The listing will be stopped by the
RUN/STOP key, and you will then be given a choice of repeating the listing
or returning to the menu screen.
LISTING ALL REMARKABLE DIRECTORY FILES ON A DISK
------------------------------------------------
To list all the RD files on the "dirmaster" or other disk, place the
disk in the drive and press F5. All the RD files on the disk will be
listed, one after the other. The listing runs as described in the previous
paragraph.
