  10. using the monks and nuns to further his
  11. lustful ambitions and when he found out
  12. they were going to repent and confess
  13. "to Abbot Costello, he killed them all.

  15. "   <He stole the Abbot's seal and sent
  16. notes to each of his victims telling
  17. them to meet him in the Library. Then
  18. he lured me down here and drugged me
  19. so he could murder the Abbot in the
  20. church and everybody else in the
  21. Library. Help me apprehend this fiend!>
  22. "   Dr Dee cries, <Wait!>
  23. &
  24. "    Dee says to you, <The Cardinal has
  25. described the plot most admirably ex-
  26. cept for the minor point that it was
  27. "he, not I, who murdered everyone.  He
  28. had received an order from Rome to keep
  29. the Papal Bull of 303 under wraps and
  30. "when the Abbot refused to comply, he
  31. gassed him in the confessional.  He had
  32. to kill everyone who knew about the
  33. Bull so he lured them into the Library
  34. where he gave them 'Last Communion'.>
  35. &
  36. "    Cardinal Musial squawks, <That's a
  37. "lie, you fiend! You killed everyone by
  38. giving them an 'antidote' to the plague
  39. in my favorite chalice.>
  40. "    The Cardinal and the doctor say to
  41. "you in unison, <Whoever you are, help
  42. me!>

  44. "Calhoon asks: Which motive is more believable, based upon the
  45. information you have gathered in your homeric journey through the
  46. "Abbey?  And if both motives are equally ridiculous, what really
  47. "happened?  Since the murderer is chosen by the flip of a coin, so to
  48. "speak, Calhoon seems to be saying that greed OR faith can make a man
  49. "lose his reason, and, in this case at least, become a murderer.  This
  50. equation of blind faith and amoral greed is a common thread among all
  51. of Calhoon's works and fits in quite well with his underlying belief
  52. that <Everything we believe is wrong.>
