LOADSTAR FORUM
We've Got Mail!
Dave (LOADSTAR) Moorman
Great news from my UCUGA magazine
that you are going to continue with
more issues of LOADSTAR!
What I want to write about is that I
am very happy that I hounded you for
three months to send me a new copy fo
LS#227. My was defective and I sent it
back to you and I am so happy I kept
after you til you sent me a new #227
because on that disk was the most
amazing game I have ever seen on the
C-64.
I am not a game player, but I like
action adventure games. I cut my eye
teeth on Castles of Dr. Creep, Maniac
Mansion and always thought they would
never make an adventure game as good
as Zak McKracken.
Well, thanks to you along came Metal
Warrior 4 -- Agents of Metal. I played
that game for over three monthes til I
beat and and escaped. I normally don't
like arcade games becasue of all the
shooting you must do. But I learned
not to mind MW4 because those
confrontations give you weapons,
bullets, and supplies to keep you
going.
That game was the biggest challenge
I ever faced playing on the C-64. I
wouldn't quit until I beat it. The
secret to that game is in the 1-, 2-,
3- save system. Using the "saves"
correctly is the only way the game can
be won.
I managed to win that game without
ever finding the "crystal." My
curiosity is bothering me so be
thinking there might be another outlet
to the game that I have started the
game over again from scratch to see if
I overlooked the crystal in the
beginning because I didn't realize it
was important.
What I want to know is this: Was
there an earlier version of MW4 --
maybe MW3. I'll gladly pay the full
cost of a new version of MW3 if it is
available.
And thank you ever so much for
putting MW4 on LOADSTAR.
I'll be waiting to hear from you.
Frank J. Morlan
Frank,
Some people call it "seeing the
light." I call it "pulling my head
out of a very dark place!" I do
apologize for making you wait so
long. But as you say, 227 had a
terrific game on it. Lasse Oorni
(aka Cadaver) is one of the great
game programmers of either
century!
I immediately checked Google for
"C64 Metal Warrior 3" and in
seconds had the page in front of
me. Protovision is the
distributor, and as I scrolled
down, I saw that the retail price
is 2 Euros. (Which is cheap until
you add international bank
charges, etc.)
But then I scrolled down a little
further, and lo! and behold, Lasse
has released MW3 as Freeware. I
downloaded it immediately. It uses
all but 76 blocks of a 1541 (D64),
and has much the same play action
and challenge to which you became
so addicted.
Our knowledgable fact checker,
Robin Harbron informs me that
Lasse is the owner of the game,
and Protovision simply makes it
availble to those who cannot
download it. I shot off an email
to Lasse, along with your fan
letter. Perhaps we will get a
mini-interview from this master of
C= software.
So -- all that said, it's here --
on 234!
Maybe your exuberant review of MW4
will encourage others to take a
shot at MW3 -- and go back to 227
for more fun.
Thanks for the letter. Sooner or
later, we do [something] right!
Dave
