Hollerith took the idea and created
cards which were punched with Census
information. His Tabulating Machine
pressed metal pins against a card,
falling through where holes were
punched into beads of mercury,
completing an electrical connection
and ratching a counter wheel.
Being a 19th Century entreprenuer,
Hollerith patented his invention, then
leased it to the Census Bureau. The
1890 Census was tabulated in one year,
at a savings of $5 million.
Hollerith formed his Tabulating
Machine company, which was purchased
by Thomas J. Watson to become part of
International Business Machines in
1914.
