Program and Story by Gus Vakalis
NOTE: This program returns to LOADSTAR
but will disable fastload cartridges
like Super SnapShot or Explode.
JiffYDOS will remain intact.
"Gimme some slack!" Your plea for
relief from stress falls upon dead
ears as you roam the deserted pathways
of Starbase 419. Hostile aliens from
the Gamma Quadrant have infiltrated
the starbase, wiped out its crew and
planted draconium bombs throughout its
forty decks. You are the only
Federation officer left alive aboard
the Starbase to disarm the bombs
before help can arrive to take back
the station.
STARBASE 419 can be played with a
joystick plugged into port 2; or with
the I, J, K, L keys and SPACE. The
number keys (1-9) control the speed of
play and are active at all times
during play. 1 is fastest and 9 is
slowest.
NOTE: If you don't use the recommended
joystick, remember that you must use
the I and K keys to move the highlight
bar menu.
You can choose to play the forty
progressively harder screens in normal
sequence or have the computer randomly
shuffle the screens for you.
You have five minutes to disarm
all bombs on each screen which you do
by running over them. You will earn
100 points for every bomb you disarm.
After you've disarmed all of the bombs
you must make your way to the red exit
hatch in order to move on to the next
screen level.
After you've entered the exit
hatch press FIRE or SPACE to stop the
clock. Your bonus will then be
calculated by multiplying the time
remaining (in seconds) by the number
of shield charges you have left.
You begin the game with nine lives
and each screen with ten shield
charges which can be replenished by
returning to the white power station
and pressing FIRE. 100 points will be
deducted from your score for each
charge. You will receive a free life
every 5000 points but you cannot
exceed nine lives total.
You will lose a shield charge
every time you are hit by an alien or
take a fall from a platform. When
your shield charges are gone the next
hit or fall will kill you so try to
keep yourself charged.
A hazard from which you have no
protection is the acid drop which
leaks from the stations power and
support systems. Any and all contact
is fatal.
There are three types of alien
creatures to avoid:
o The red HELORAPTORS which can fly
all over the screen except through
the flashing girders which repel
them.
o The green CROCADONS which crawl
back and forth along the platforms
and staircases.
o The purple SENTRIES which stand
stationary at their posts but which
will alert the HELORAPTORD of your
position if you come within two
spaces of them.
On most decks you will also find
items which you can interact with such
as:
o The cyan TELEPORTER stations which
will teleport you from one station
to another on the screen. To
activate one just step inside of it
and press FIRE and then watch the
other stations to see where you
come out.
o The red and purple TRANSPORTER
BEAMS which will safely move you up
and down between platforms. While
you are demolecularized within the
beam you are safe from all threats.
o The red PUSH BUTTONS which effect
changes to the screen. To activate
a PUSH BUTTON just stand over it
and press FIRE and watch the screen
for changes; but be warned, some
buttons have been rewired by the
intruders to activate traps.
Good luck and eternal Slack!

[DAVE'S AFTERSHAVE]: The game [Elite]
was slated for this issue, but Robin
Harbron caught a minor flaw -- it did
not work on an NTSC (US) type C-64. He
is now hacking away to see what the
problem might be. STARBASE 419
happened to be exactly the same size
and the Elite package -- so here you
have it.
