  6.     I didn't realize how packed this
  7. issue would be. I have found a couple
  8. of great programs on the Web for your
  9. delight -- Elite and MOOD.
  10.  
  11.     Now you might be wondering, "Why
  12. should we [pay] for software pulled
  13. down from the Web? Well -- first of
  14. all, I would love to have more new
  15. software to premier on LOADSTAR, and
  16. some is certainly in the works. But
  17. the other is a study in quality.
  18.  
  19.     The software that appears on
  20. LOADSTAR is not just "off the Web." If
  21. you have downloaded games and demos,
  22. you certainly know the drill. You hunt
  23. down what you want, download it, unzip
  24. it. Then give it a go. This takes
  25. maybe 30 minutes.
  26.  
  27.     The sad truth is much of what is
  28. on the Web is patently unuseable.
  29. Many demos simply don't work. So a
  30. good half hour is shot with nothing to
  31. show for it. I like to think I make
  32. $10 an hour -- so that's $5 right
  33. there.

  35.     Elite is a case to point. Elite is
  36. certainly one of the deepest deep
  37. space games ever created, and the
  38. authors are happy to see it freely
  39. distributed. So I downloaded it, and
  40. had it slated for this issue. Then I
  41. started the testing process -- and
  42. wouldn't you know it, Elite crapped
  43. out. I tried to do a quick fix, but
  44. couldn't get the program to work.

  46.     Fortunately, the Web is a big
  47. place, and another download of Elite
  48. was available. This one worked --
  49. allbeit with a crummy, spastic title
  50. screen (tons of screen garbage as the
  51. program itself loaded). So I used VICE
  52. to capture the title graphic, GIFed
  53. it, GoDotted it to a .SHP file, and
  54. redid the opening sequence.

  56.     Then Robin Harbron discovered it
  57. wouldn't work on NTSC machines. Oh
  58. well. We will try to fix it for you.

  60.     We also have music this issue --
  61. 57 tunes from Euro-dudez. I am always
  62. left breathless when I hear what these
  63. masters of the SID create with just
  64. three voices. You might say they
  65. maximize minimalism!

  67.     For next month, our release date
  68. will be May 29 -- during the Spring
  69. Expo in New Albany/ Louisville. We
  70. will be there, taking pictures and
  71. getting the stories. And LOADSTARites
  72. in attendance will receive issue 231,
  73. hot off the press!

  75.     Well -- that's the hope. LOADSTAR
  76. is doing all we can to forward C=
  77. computing, and will be going full
  78. tilt. Don't miss one incredible issue!
