by Dave Moorman
I didn't realize how packed this
issue would be. I have found a couple
of great programs on the Web for your
delight -- Elite and MOOD.
Now you might be wondering, "Why
should we [pay] for software pulled
down from the Web? Well -- first of
all, I would love to have more new
software to premier on LOADSTAR, and
some is certainly in the works. But
the other is a study in quality.
The software that appears on
LOADSTAR is not just "off the Web." If
you have downloaded games and demos,
you certainly know the drill. You hunt
down what you want, download it, unzip
it. Then give it a go. This takes
maybe 30 minutes.
The sad truth is much of what is
on the Web is patently unuseable.
Many demos simply don't work. So a
good half hour is shot with nothing to
show for it. I like to think I make
$10 an hour -- so that's $5 right
there.
Elite is a case to point. Elite is
certainly one of the deepest deep
space games ever created, and the
authors are happy to see it freely
distributed. So I downloaded it, and
had it slated for this issue. Then I
started the testing process -- and
wouldn't you know it, Elite crapped
out. I tried to do a quick fix, but
couldn't get the program to work.
Fortunately, the Web is a big
place, and another download of Elite
was available. This one worked --
allbeit with a crummy, spastic title
screen (tons of screen garbage as the
program itself loaded). So I used VICE
to capture the title graphic, GIFed
it, GoDotted it to a .SHP file, and
redid the opening sequence.
Then Robin Harbron discovered it
wouldn't work on NTSC machines. Oh
well. We will try to fix it for you.
We also have music this issue --
57 tunes from Euro-dudez. I am always
left breathless when I hear what these
masters of the SID create with just
three voices. You might say they
maximize minimalism!
For next month, our release date
will be May 29 -- during the Spring
Expo in New Albany/ Louisville. We
will be there, taking pictures and
getting the stories. And LOADSTARites
in attendance will receive issue 231,
hot off the press!
Well -- that's the hope. LOADSTAR
is doing all we can to forward C=
computing, and will be going full
tilt. Don't miss one incredible issue!
