  23. The unprecidented, three volume work
  24. languished for twenty years. Then a
  25. new generation cast off the plastic
  26. sameness of the their mass culture and
  27. embraced myth, magic, and chemical
  28. madness.

  30. They also rejected the official
  31. definitions of Good and Evil being
  32. played out in a jungle far away. The
  33. Lord of the Rings became a sort of
  34. alternative scripture, describing
  35. truth that was deeper than ideologies.

  37. The story begins in bucolic Hobbit
  38. Town, where life is safe and simple.

  46. But isolation is not enough. Dark and
  47. terrible things were rising on the far
  48. horizon.

  50. The new generation grew too old for
  51. college loans. They cut their hair,
  52. bought conservative suits, got
  53. married, found jobs. Had children.

  55. If only someone could turn the saga
  56. into a motion picture!

  58. Dark Riders were searching for the
  59. Ring. Not just a magic ring that made
  60. the wearer invisible, but the
  61.  
  62.       One Ring to Rule Them All
  63.         One Ring to Find Them
  64.       One Ring to Bring Them All
  65.     And In the Darkness Bind Them.

  77. this Ring." Frodo, Bilbo's nephew
  78. laments.

  80. Gandalf the Wizard replies, "Do not
  81. think that the only power at work in
  82. the world is Evil. In some way, you
  83. were meant to be the Ring Bearer."

  85. But in the real world, no amount of
  86. animation magic could bring the story
  87. to life. All attempts were sadly
  88. childish or woefully underfunded.

  98. The fateful quest is on, and a band of
  99. happless hobbits make for Rivendale
  100. and help in disposing of the Ring.

  102. The problem for filmmaking was that
  103. pen and paint could not capture the
  104. wholeness and texture of Tolkein's
  105. Middle Earth.

  107. Meanwhile, a new genre developed --
  108. role playing games. And dungeon
  109. masters took small bands of wizards,
  110. dwarves, thieves, elves, and knights
  111. into imaginary worlds of beasts and
  112. booty.

  114. Frodo's pursuers have wounded him and
  115. are on his heels. Fortunately, the
  116. magic of the Elves of Rivendale send
  117. rushing stallions of water to wash the
  118. Black Riders into oblivion.
