By Mark Dickenson
Text by Fender Tucker updated by John
Andrew Kaputa for stereo mode startup
with some additional notes.
If you have never seen Mark
Dickenson's STEREOPLAYER you are in
for a real treat. It's the best music
player for the C-64 ever made. Mark
has been the guru of music programmers
since 1983 and this version of his
stereo player is the latest and
greatest I've seen.
NOTE: Mark seems to have thought of
everything except making the program
work from any drive. The STEREOPLAYER
disk must be in drive 8 when first
booted. Once in the program you can
switch to other drives for music
files.
INSTRUCTIONS
Boot Mark A. Dickenson's 64 Stereo
Player from the menu by choosing the
STEREOPLAYER boot file. After choosing
to fastload or not, a heavy- metaled
(?) theme from "2001 A Space Odyssey"
should start. Press RETURN when you
have heard enough and his program will
show any music files on the disk in a
window of Menu 1.
Use the cursor and RETURN to
highlight a block of files from top to
bottom and press F2. Sit back and
listen. F1 will play the individual
file located under the cursor whether
highlighted or not; SPACE or F5 will
abort the music.
Even if you don't have the SID
Symphony Stereo Cartridge you can
still access the right side voices by
loading a piece with F1, stopping the
music with SPACE, and then pressing
the . (period) key. The , (comma) key
will play only the left side.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
(1) An endless Loop-from-Hell will
occur if you press F5 after changing
to a partition or subdirectory that
does not contain any .MUS file. Prior
to pressing F5 anytime after swapping
drives or issuing a DOS command via
the C key, always press D and check
the directory.
(2) Press the Commodore (C=) key to
toggle between Menus 1 and 2.
(3) If the .STR files do not load,
bring up Menu 2 and ensure that
(DE00)or (DF00) is indicated in the
window with the A key.
(4) If you do not have the SID
Symphony Stereo Cartridge, bring up
Menu 2 and use the M key to toggle
from Stereo to Normal in the upper
right window. Only then you can watch
the band play.
(5) The computer remembers the order
that you highlight selections with
RETURN and will play them in that
order regardless of where the cursor
is when you press F2. This is
convenient if you want to play them
out of the order listed in the
directory.
(6) Experiment with the various
options of Menus 1 and 2. You can
always start over if you make a
mistake, at least until you save that
mistake to the sidstereo.config file.
(7) Don't forget to flip the disk and
press D and F5 to check out the music
on the other side.
Mark Dickenson deserves a lot of
credit for the superior programming
job he's done. LOADSTAR is proud to be
able to bring STEREOPLAYER to our
readers who may have missed it before.
Music lovers, have a ball.
