G U M S H O E
by Rev. David Moorman
The other night, I needed a puzzle
fix. Not just any puzzle, but a
LOGIC PROBLEM, where you have this
scrambled list of names and stuff to
sort out. All my PUZZLE PAGEs had
been long solved. Ditto my Dell
magazines. The time was 3 am and
our neighborhood convenience store
doesn't carry such tame publications
anyway.
So I warmed up the 64 and booted
up GUMSHOE. Here is a logic problem
program that never grows old. With
each game, you can choose up to 25
suspects in a murder mystery. Unlike
a printed logic problem, you get to
select which clues you think will be
most valuable as you piece together
the evidence. And if that's not
enough, some of the clues (those
obtained from the perpetrator) are
outright lies!
But Gumshoe is more than just a
way to wile away lonely time. Here
is a party game for up to 10 players,
who can work together to solve the
mystery, or stealthily compete to be
the one to arrest the culprit! But
watch out! Each player has only so
many points, which are expended with
each question and only replenished
with good guesses. When the points
are gone, the player is out of the
game.
The scenario revolves around a
hostess who is found murdered at her
garden party. Since this could only
be done when one guest is present,
the murderer must be the first guest
to arrive.
I am no strategist, but two
underlying facts of the game are
important. The villain ALWAYS lies
when interviewed. The last person to
arrive NEVER lies. Thus, the first
task is to find the last person, and
connect first and last names and
occupation. Then one can start to
build the list up to the top.
The three names/jobs listed at the
beginning of each player's turn are
completely scrambled. If you are not
using the Suspect List Print-out, be
sure to jot down these names. They
will not be repeated. If you are
using the print-out, the genders of
last names are important.
When points run low, you will need
to do some successful verifying to
build up your reserves. If the first
and last names match, the verify
costs nothing. If you are the first
to connect the correct occupation,
you receive 3 points.
But as Gordo Gumshoe says,
"Enough jaw-jaw. It don't happen
until the gumshoe hits the pavement!"

AFTER-NOTE: This program was the
second I submitted -- taken from a
program I wrote a couple of years
earlier. Again -- as with Tabloid
Headlines -- this is all about random
numbers and string arrays.
