WHAT GOES UP ?

We publish all kinds of games on
LOADSTAR, from the trivial to the
profound, from the simplest to the
toughest. Johnny Harris is a true
gamer, having mastered many of the
games found in mall arcades and on
the Nintendo system. He's also a
good programmer and WHAT GOES UP is
proof that an arcade game need not be
a mindless joystick exercise. This
game will make you think AND
experiment.
Do not plan on breezing through
this 12-stage animated maze. He has
created a world filled with barriers,
objects, rockets, deadly acid, keys
and even stores where objects can be
bought. WHAT GOES UP is a game for
experts, but you don't need to be an
expert to begin -- just be assured
that you will be a game expert when/if
you finish.
You are represented by a spherical
character and your job is to "solve"
each stage by moving around, picking
up items and riches. Once you find a
"card" on a stage you can exit to the
next higher stage by finding the exit.
You will find many stumbling
blocks along the way. Timing is
important on some of the stages.
Often you will have to play a stage
over and over again, trying different
things, figuring out the exact
sequence of events that will lead to
your getting the card and getting
outta there. We very much recommend
using the practice mode to learn each
stage. After you choose to "Play the
Game" you'll see a title screen with
a message scrolling left to right.
At this point type blindly,
LOADSTAR!
and you'll go to an options menu.
Press P to practice and you'll be
asked for the stage you want.
This is one game you'll HAVE to
print out the documentation for. The
following comes from the Mad Gamer's
lips himself. Be forewarned that
you'll be expected to pay attention
as you go along. Not everything is
spelled out in the docs. Johnny
expects you to be as good (or mad) a
gamer as he is by the time you finish
Stage 12.
He included his Stage-Editor
program as part of this program so
that you can use your own creativity,
imagination and outright cussedness
to make your own stages. He'd like
to see them and so would we here at
the Tower.
Johnny's docs follow, in three
sections: Game play, Hints and Tips,
and the Stage Editor. To copy WHAT
GOES UP, either use a commercial
file-copier or use our Copy It
feature. Copy It will copy all of
the files, including the three
documentation files.
I found that even with Johnny's
hints and tips some of the stages
were still very difficult, so I asked
him to send me a DETAILED text file
that tells exactly what to do. This
file won't fit on this issue so I'm
going to put it on LOADSTAR #83.
This will give you a month to stew
over WHAT GOES UP.

You may play with a joystick in
Port #2 or with a joystick in port #1.
If you choose to play in Port #1, you
may also use the keyboard. Some
keypresses are the same as Port #1's
movements. NOTE: If you play with a
joystick in port #1, you will have to
use the keyboard when you're in the
shops and to enter your name. If you
use a joystick in port #2, you can sit
back and use the joystick for just
about everything.
LEFT/CONTROL key - Move to left.
RIGHT/2 key - Move to right.
UP/1 key - Move item select arrow one
selection up.
DOWN/BACK ARROW key - Move item
select arrow one selection down.
FIRE/SPACE bar - Use item selected.
PLAYING THE GAME

Press FIRE or, if you're playing
with the keyboard, SPACE, to begin.
After a second, you will hear a bell,
and the first stage will begin to
load. In a second, the name of the
stage will appear. After it's
finished loading, the game screen is
displayed. On the left side is the
playfield. This is where you move
around, fall off ledges, ram into
walls, get killed, and other fun
stuff. On the right side of the
screen is a status display which
shows your score, number of players
remaining, time left, current
financial status, number of items you
have left, and whether you have the
card or key.
To leave one stage for the next,
you have to find the access card and
enter the exit. You must find the
card before you can use the exit.
Trying without one will put you back
at the start of the stage. NOTE:
Once you have found the exit, you
no longer have to land on the exit
to use it. It's okay to enter
through the side. In every stage you
have a certain amount of time before
the fumes from the acid do you in.
There's no way to get more time! Run
out, and you lose a player. Lose
three players and the game's over.
You can also lose a life if you:
- Touch or land on acid or beams
without a shield in effect.
- Try to transport off the side of the
screen.
- Choose "abort" from the pause menu.
Here's a list of special devices,
features, platforms, and other
non-item things you'll find:
NOTE: This is not a complete list!
You'll have to figure some things out
for yourself.
- Walls: Completely impassable. There
are several types of terrain that
fall in to this category.
- Bricks (small): Can be destroyed by
bombs (see items).
- Transporters: Come in three types.
Left and right transporters zap you
five spaces in the indicated
direction. Down transporters take you
ten spaces down. By the way, you must
land on a transporter to use it.
- Slopes: Slanted walls that can be
rolled down, but not up.
- Doors: Sort of a new-and-improved
transporter, one of these can take
you just about anywhere, so be
careful. If you roll off the side of
the screen, the game treats it as if
you went through a door.
- Blocks: Flashing boxes that can be
pushed around. You can even drop them
off ledges. By the way, if a block on
the screen is moving, you won't be
able to push another block until it
either stops, or something gets rid
of it like acid or it falls off the
bottom of the screen.
- Mystery Boxes: Blocks with something
inside them. Push them against a
wall and break it open...
- Conveyor Belts: Land on one of these
and you'll find yourself moving along
with it. It's impossible to roll
against its movement, but there is
another way...
- Shops: Looks like an outlined door.
To get in, you have to enter from the
side. Once there, press the number
next to what you want to buy, or
press SPACE to exit. If you're
playing with a joystick in port #2,
you can use that to buy stuff.
Remember, you can only carry nine of
each type of item, so don't buy what
you can't hold.
- Exits: Here's where you go to get
to the next level.
- Acid and Beams: Deadly, unless
shield is in effect (see items.)
ITEMS
-----
There are a number of objects that
can be picked up. Learning how and
when to use them is an important step
toward winning. Here's the stuff you
can find:
- Coins: Wow! Money!
- Dollar Signs: Worth 5 coins.
- Access Cards: When you find one, it
appears in the CARD box at the bottom
of the status display. You can't use
the exit without it. If you lose a
life while you have it, you'll have
to find it again.
- Keys: Very hush-hush. Hard to find,
too. If you get one, you'll keep it
for the rest of the game.
- Disks: The key to getting extremely
high scores. About the only way of
wiping the smirk off The Mad Gamer's
face (see the top score list).
- Ups (1ups): An extra life.
The remaining objects have their own
little sections on the status display.
To use one, move the item select arrow
to the one you want and press FIRE/
SPACE. (Moving it to PAUSE and
pressing FIRE pauses the game.) Here
they are, in the order they appear on
the status display.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! Until you
learn the icons, you'll need to refer
to this to know what they stand for.
- Rockets: Weird looking object, but
very helpful. About the only method
in the game of moving up in the
world. When used, sends the player up
until it hits something, or travels
ten spaces. A quick note, when the
rocket disappears, you will ALWAYS
fall a space before you can move left
or right.
- Flashlights: Great for dark stages,
but of little use in other places.
