the works that hang
in the gallery
this month are by
the dutch-born gra-
phic artist m.c.
escher (b.1898,d.
1972). escher spent
his early career on
the move around the
small towns of
italy and sicily.
but in 1941, after
living in rome for
over a decade, he
returned to his
native netherlands
where he spent the
rest of his life.
^s:PRESSANY
escher worked
primarily with
woodcut, wood
engraving, and
lithography. his
style is very
realistic and
detailed, and
features complex
geometrical pat-
terns and unusual
perspectives that
fool the eye and
create optical
illusions.
^s:PRESSANY
escher's tech-
nique and artistic
ability transports
the viewer into a
magical world where
the impossible be-
comes commonplace.
^s:PRESSANY
our gallery has
four walls, each
displaying a detail
of one of escher's
works.

this piece is a
1935 wood engraving
entitled "dream".
here, the artist
experiments with
creating a gradual
transition from
light to dark in
woodcuts and wood
engravings.

thematically, in
the mystical sub-
ject of the praying
mantis and bishop's
tomb, escher unites
widely divergent
forms of prayer--
the praying form of
the bishop's effigy
and the prayerful
attitude of the
mantis.

this piece is a
wood cut, "sky and
water 1.", done in
1938. in this work
escher uses a tech-
nique that has
become an escher
trademark.
^s:PRESSANY
the subject of this
print is not just
birds and fish but
the transformation
that occurs between
background and
foreground. escher
uses this meta-
morphosis in the
majority of his
work and always
seems to find the
perfect harmony of
space and subject.

"drawing hands", a
lithograph done in
1948,shows escher's
attention to detail
and expert drafts-
manship. the sub-
ject is two hands
emerging from a
sheet of paper,
each drawing the
other.
^s:PRESSANY
this type of fine
detail and line
variation can be
achieved in
lithography because
of the exacting
nature of the proc-
cess. the artist
creates a litho-
graph by drawing
on a stone slab
with a wax crayon
and then etching
the stone with
acid. the drawn
lines will accept
ink and the rest
will resist ink
when printed on
paper.

this selection is
also a lithograph,
"portrait of g.a.
escher", a por-
trait of escher's
father (1935). in
this lithograph,
like the other one
in this gallery,
escher achieves
fine detail and
very subtle vari-
ations in tone in
the face and hand.
