*** ONE ***
Written by: Ron Coffen
ONE is a game similar to the popular
party game UNO (UNO is a registered
trademark of IGI). You'll love this
one because you can play it any time
you want! With ONE you can match wits
against your very own computer! From
now on when I refer the the computer,
I will call him Kniel.
It is a user friendly game for
almost all ages. If you are not
LOADing the game from within LOADSTAR,
you can LOAD it by typing-
LOAD"ONE",8
Before starting the game, Kniel does
a few things for you. First, Kniel
begins by LOADing music to amuse you
while playing the game. (There is one
other purpose for this music as you
will see later.) Next, Kniel shuffles
the cards. Be patient because it
usually takes about 15 seconds.
Lastly, Kniel randomly chooses who
goes first.
Kniel will then take the top card
off of the draw pile and put it on the
screen. Your cards will be displayed
at the top of the screen.
When it is your turn you will see a
white arrow underneath the first card
in you hand. To move the arrow to
the card you wish to play, simply use
the right cursor key. The arrow will
move to the next card. Do this until
it is positioned under the card you
want to play. When you have
positioned the arrow press the
RETURN key. Your card will be placed
onto the pile (providing it is a legal
card to play). If you haven't played
a card permitting you to go again,
your cards will be updated and
reprinted on the screen, after which
Kniel will take his turn.
At this point, you should watch the
play pile so that you can see what
card Kniel plays. Kniel always tells
you how many cards he has left.
If you do not have a card you can
play you must draw a card. To do
this simply position the white arrow
under the word "DRAW". Kniel will ask
you if you really want to draw a
card. Answer him with a Y or N. If
after drawing a card you are still
unable to play you will notice that
the word "DRAW" has changed to
"PASS". Since you can't play, move
the arrow under the word and press
RETURN. Again Kniel will ask you if
you are sure you want to pass.
If you and/or Kniel have one card
left the music will change. The
change is fairly obvious, instead of
playing all three voices, only the
third voice is played.
When someone wins, either you or
Kniel, the loser's cards are shown;
the score is totaled; and the number
of games that both of you have won
is displayed.
After a hand you may type 'Y' to
play again or 'N' if you wish to end
the game. If you try entering
anything other than a word beginning
with 'Y' or 'N', you'll get a suprise!
Here are the rules for playing a
legal card:
1. The card you play must be the same
color as the top card in the pile.
- OR -
2. The card you play must have the
same 'face' as top card in the
pile. For example, you can play
a BLUE four onto a RED four. You
can also play a GREEN skip onto a
BLUE skip.
- OR -
3. The card you play must be a WILD
or a WILD DRAW FOUR card. With
either of these cards, you get to
select the new playing color. If
you play a WILD DRAW FOUR, then
Kniel must draw four cards from
the deck.
The goal of ONE is to get rid of all
of your cards before your opponent (in
this case Kniel) does.
Here is a list of the "special" cards
in the ONE deck:
S : An S card means a skip. After
you play a skip card, you get
to play another card. In other
words, Kniel has been skipped.
D : A D card means draw two. If
you play a draw two card, then
Kniel must draw two cards from
the deck. Likewise, if Kniel
plays a draw two card, then you
must take two more cards.
Whoever plays a draw two card
gets to play again.
R : A R card means reverse.
Whoever plays a reverse card
gets to play again.
W : A W card specifies a wild card.
Whoever plays a wild card gets
to pick the new playing color.
After playing a wild card, play
continues as normal. In other
words, whoever plays a wild
card does not get to play
again.
W with four colors on it :
This is a wild draw four. It
is a powerful card. By playing
this card, you force your
opponent to draw four cards,
you get to pick the new playing
color, and you get to play
again. Whew! This is a bit
like playing a wild card and
two draw twos at the same time.
