Copying Protected Software on the C64
Review by Thomas F. Trocco,
computer lessons host,
KIDS America, American Public Radio.
If you're going to spend $20, $30,
$40, or more on computer software,
then you really should use a disk
copier program to make a backup copy.
You can then keep the original in a
safe place, and use the copy.
However, with most commercial
software, protection schemes are used
which make it difficult to make a
copy with a simple copying program.
For these, you need a more advanced
program, such as:
Di-Sector 2.0
Starpoint Software
Star Route
Gazelle, CA 96034
Mr. Nibble
Full Circle Software
P.O. Box 1373
Dayton, OH 45401
The Clone Machine
Micro-W
1342B Route 23
Butler, NJ 07405
Ultrabyte Disk Nibbler
Ultrabyte
P.O. Box 789
La Canada, CA 91011
I used each of the above programs
to copy the same copy-protected
program (only one backup copy was
retained). Times for loading and
copying are:
loading copying total
DS 0:15 23:00 23:15
MN 0:42 6.17 6:59
TCM 0:42 34:45 35:37
UDN 0:51 6:15 7:06
What else do these programs do?
DS also includes a three minute
backup for unprotected disks, a file
copier, a sector editor (for those
who know what they're doing), a fast
formatter, and the ability to
software write-protect a disk. MN
also has a fast formatter and a fast
copy for unprotected software. TCM is
the most sophisticated of the four.
You also have the ability to copy
files, edit track/blocks, analyze
errors with Unguard, and you can get
the Clone News to keep you informed
of the latest ways to copy certain
certain software.
Which to get? If you're not up
to fooling with the data on the disk,
then Mr. Nibble or Disk Nibbler are
for you. They're fairly fast, and
will create a usable disk in most
cases. If you want to copy all your
software, and you feel you're capable
of using a track/block editor, then
Di-Sector or The Clone Machine should
be your choice.
Whichever you choose, remember
that you are allowed by law to make
one backup copy for yourself, not for
sale or as gifts.
